Best Portable Projectors
For backyard movie nights
Our #1 pick is the XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser. Backyard movies, camping trips and bedroom ceilings. We compared five portable projectors with streaming built in, from a $150 Roku TV model to XGIMI’s triple-laser MoGo 4.
How we picked: we shortlist by Amazon Best Seller rank and number of ratings, then compare published specs. We don't test these products hands-on.

The short answer
For most families, the XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser is the portable projector to buy. It uses a triple-laser light source rated at 450 to 550 ISO lumens (the listing gives both figures), runs Google TV with licensed Netflix, has Harman Kardon speakers, and the included PowerBase stand stretches playtime to about five hours. That is enough for a double feature in the backyard with no extension cord.
If you want a big screen for much less, the Aurzen BOOM Air runs Google TV with native 1080p and powers from a USB-C power bank, and the Aurzen D1R air does the same job with Roku TV built in for even less. The Wanbo ToGo Pro is the budget pick with a battery built right in, and the Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen is the one to get if you want to point a picture at the ceiling and play cloud games from Samsung’s Gaming Hub.
Skip the MoGo 4 Laser if you mainly want a projector for a dark basement or home theater. Portable projectors trade brightness for size, and none here gets close to a full-size living room projector or a TV in daylight. For a permanent setup, see our best projectors guide. Also skip it if you only plan to watch indoors near an outlet: the cheaper Aurzen models give you the same 1080p picture for a fraction of the price.
How we picked: we looked at the portable projectors families buy most on Amazon, kept only real brands with streaming built in, and read the specs on each live listing and what owners say after real movie nights. We don’t claim lab tests: brightness figures come from the listings. Checked October 2026.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Overall
XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $550–$650 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The MoGo 4 Laser is the most complete portable projector here. The listing says its triple-laser engine reaches 450 to 550 ISO lumens (the listing quotes both) with very wide color, and XGIMI recommends an 80 to 100-inch picture for the best result. The included PowerBase stand doubles playtime to up to 5 hours, so a family movie night outdoors doesn’t need an outlet. Google TV with licensed Netflix means no streaming stick, and the 360° stand plus auto image alignment lets you aim it at a wall, a screen or the ceiling. Owners praise the color and the Harman Kardon sound. It is the priciest pick by a wide margin.
Pros- Up to 5 hours unplugged with the PowerBase stand
- Triple-laser light with very wide color
- Google TV with official Netflix, no dongle needed
Cons- Costs about three times the Aurzen picks
- Still needs dusk or darkness outdoors
- Laser models are newer, with fewer long-term reviews
- 2. Best Value
Aurzen BOOM Air
BeastScore 89 / 100Typically $180–$220 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The BOOM Air gives you most of what the MoGo does for about a third of the price. It is native 1080p with HDR10, runs Google TV with the major apps, and the listing calls it about the size of a water bottle. There is no battery inside: it runs on USB-C power, so you plug it into a 65 W or stronger power bank for the backyard or a laptop charger indoors. ToF autofocus keeps the picture sharp as you move it, and the 360° Dolby Audio speaker is loud enough for a small group. At 300 ANSI lumens, it needs real darkness. Owners rate it highly for the money.
Pros- Native 1080p with Google TV for around $200
- Runs from a USB-C power bank, so it goes anywhere
- Fast ToF autofocus and Kids Mode
Cons- No built-in battery: you need a 65W+ power bank and the right cable
- Dimmer than the MoGo 4 Laser
- Best only in dark rooms or after sunset
- 3. Best for Ceilings & Gaming
Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen
BeastScore 86 / 100Typically $450–$600 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The Freestyle 2nd Gen is the most flexible to aim. Its cradle stand rotates 180 degrees, so it throws a 30 to 100-inch picture onto a wall, a door or the bedroom ceiling, and auto leveling, focus and keystone fix the image for you. It runs Samsung’s smart TV system with the Gaming Hub, so you can stream console-style games with a controller and no console. The 360° speaker fills a room. Like the BOOM Air, it has no battery inside; the listing says to pair it with a USB-C battery for outdoor use. It is a 2023 model, and owners say it is dimmer than newer laser models.
Pros- 180° stand projects onto ceilings with no tripod
- Samsung Gaming Hub for cloud games
- Full auto setup: level, focus, keystone
Cons- Pricey for a dimmer, 2023-era picture
- No built-in battery
- Older 2023 model, launched before the newer laser rivals
- 4. Best Built-in Battery for Less
Wanbo ToGo Pro
BeastScore 85 / 100Typically $280–$330 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The ToGo Pro is for people who want a true battery projector without paying MoGo money. The listing says its built-in battery runs up to 3.5 hours of video, enough for two movies in Eco mode, and it keeps playing while charging. You get native 1080p, 500 ANSI lumens, Google TV 14 with 32 GB of storage, and fast autofocus and keystone that help on uneven ground. A carry handle and a 360° stand make it easy to set up on a picnic table. The trade-off: Wanbo is a smaller brand and this is a new 2026 model, so there are far fewer owner reviews than the others here.
Pros- Built-in battery with up to 3.5 hours of video
- Bright for the price at 500 ANSI lumens
- Google TV with 32 GB storage and a carry handle
Cons- New model with a short owner track record
- Smaller brand, so support is less proven
- Speakers are weaker than the MoGo’s
- 5. Best Budget Pick
Aurzen D1R air
BeastScore 84 / 100Typically $130–$160 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The D1R air is the cheapest way into a real-brand smart projector. Aurzen calls it the first portable Roku TV projector, so you get the familiar Roku home screen, the big apps and free live channels with no stick or extra remote. It is native 1080p at 300 ANSI lumens, which suits dark bedrooms and backyards after sunset. Power comes over USB-C PD at 65 W or more, from a wall charger, laptop charger or power bank. The gimbal stand has the power port on the bottom so the cable never gets in the way when you tilt it. It is as dim as the BOOM Air and has no battery inside.
Pros- Roku TV built in, easiest menus for kids and grandparents
- Native 1080p for the lowest price here
- Gimbal stand that tilts to the ceiling
Cons- No built-in battery
- Dim in any ambient light
- Speakers are fine for a bedroom, thin outdoors

- Triple-laser light
- Up to 5 hrs playtime
- Harman Kardon sound
Quick tips before you buy
Some “portable” models have no battery and need a 65W+ USB-C power bank. Budget for one if so.
Going bigger makes a portable projector look dim. Most look best at 80 to 100 inches.
Outdoor movies look best 30 minutes after sunset. Even the laser pick here struggles at dusk.
Built-in speakers fade in the open air. A Bluetooth speaker near the audience helps a lot.
Quick answers
What is the best portable projector?+
The XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser. It has a triple-laser light source, Google TV with licensed Netflix, Harman Kardon speakers and up to 5 hours of playtime with the included PowerBase stand.
What is the best portable projector for outdoor movies?+
The MoGo 4 Laser if budget allows, because its laser light gives the richest color here and it runs longest unplugged. The Wanbo ToGo Pro is the cheaper option with a built-in battery of up to 3.5 hours.
Do portable projectors have batteries?+
Not all of them. The MoGo 4 Laser and Wanbo ToGo Pro have batteries. The Aurzen BOOM Air, Aurzen D1R air and Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen need a wall plug or a strong USB-C power bank.
How many lumens do I need for a backyard projector?+
For after-dark backyard movies at 80 to 100 inches, 300 ANSI lumens works and 500 or more looks noticeably better. No portable projector looks good in daylight.
Is the Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen worth it?+
It is worth it if you want to project onto a ceiling or play cloud games through Samsung Gaming Hub. For straight movie watching, the Aurzen BOOM Air gives a similar 1080p picture for much less.
Can I use a portable projector instead of a TV?+
In a dark room, yes. In a bright living room, a TV is much better. Portable projectors are best as a second screen for bedrooms, trips and backyard nights.
