The short answer
For most kitchens, the Instant Pot Duo 6 qt is still the electric pressure cooker to buy. It pressure cooks, slow cooks, sautés, steams and makes rice and yogurt, has 13 one-touch programs, and uses a stainless steel pot with a tri-ply bottom that browns meat properly. It is one of the most-reviewed kitchen appliances on Amazon, and it usually costs under $100.
If you cook every day and want more control, the Instant Pot Pro adds sous vide, baking, 28 programs and a quieter steam release. If you want the newest design, the Ninja HyperHeat builds pressure fast and has a wide pot you can sear in and carry to the table. The Cosori 6 qt is a great-value Instant Pot rival with a ceramic-coated pot and a dishwasher-safe lid, and the Instant Pot Duo Plus 8 qt is the one for big families and batch cooking.
Skip the Duo if you are mainly after crispy food. A pressure cooker makes food tender, not crunchy; for wings and fries, get an air fryer instead (see our best air fryers guide). Also skip the 6-quart size if you regularly cook for six or more or freeze big batches of stock: the 8-quart Duo Plus saves you a second round.
How we picked: we compared the best-selling electric pressure cookers on Amazon, read each live listing for functions and pot material, and looked at what owners say after months of weeknight cooking. We don’t claim hands-on tests. Checked October 2026.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Overall
Instant Pot Duo 6 qt
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $70–$100 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The Duo is the pressure cooker almost every recipe online is written for, and that alone makes it the easy choice. The listing covers seven functions and 13 one-touch programs, from soups to cakes. The 18/8 stainless steel pot with a tri-ply bottom sears meat before you pressure cook, and there is no nonstick coating to wear out. The Easy-Release switch keeps your hand away from the steam. It has one of the largest owner bases of any kitchen appliance, and owners mostly praise how reliable it is for beans, stews, rice and yogurt. It lacks sous vide and bake, and the release is louder than on newer models.
Pros- Stainless steel pot with no coating to wear out
- Most recipes online are written for it
- Reliable, simple and usually under $100
Cons- No sous vide or bake modes
- Steam release is loud and less diffused than the Pro
- Basic display with no cooking progress bar
- 2. Best for Daily Cooks
Instant Pot Pro 6 qt
BeastScore 90 / 100Typically $140–$170 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The Pro is the Instant Pot to get once you use one every day. It adds sous vide, bake and sterilize to the Duo’s functions for 10 in all, and the program count jumps to 28. Instant says it preheats 20% faster. The two quality-of-life upgrades owners mention most are the gentle steam release with a diffusing cover, which is quieter and less startling, and a dishwasher-safe lid and inner pot. It makes up to six servings, the same as the Duo. The catch is price: it often costs close to double the Duo, and if you only make chili and rice, you won’t use the extras.
Pros- Sous vide, bake and 28 programs
- Quieter, diffused steam release
- Lid and pot both go in the dishwasher
Cons- Often close to double the Duo’s price
- Same 6 qt capacity as the Duo
- More buttons and menus to learn
- 3. Best New Design
Ninja HyperHeat 6.5 qt
BeastScore 88 / 100Typically $150–$180 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)Ninja’s HyperHeat is the freshest take on the Instant Pot formula. The listing says HyperHeat builds pressure quickly, and it quotes white rice in about 8 minutes of cook time. The pot is wide, giving a large searing surface so you can brown meat without crowding, and the removable SimpliServe pot is designed to go straight to the table. At 6.5 quarts, it fits a 4 lb chicken or a 5 lb roast and serves a big family. It also does sous vide, slow cook, steam and yogurt. It is a newer model, so it has far fewer owner reviews than the Instant Pots, and it costs about as much as the Pro.
Pros- Wide pot for proper searing
- Serve straight from the SimpliServe pot
- Slightly bigger 6.5 qt capacity
Cons- Newer, with a short owner track record
- Priced like the Instant Pot Pro
- Fewer online recipes written for it
- 4. Best Value
Cosori Pressure Cooker 6 qt
BeastScore 87 / 100Typically $80–$100 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The Cosori is the Instant Pot rival that owners rave about. For about Duo money, the listing gives you nine functions including sous vide and ferment, a dishwasher-safe lid and a ceramic-coated pot. The vent design is smart: the seal/vent button sits away from the steam valve and the steam shoots back at a 30° angle, away from your hand. It has 12 safety features and a fingerprint-resistant housing that stays clean on the counter. The ceramic coating is easier to clean than steel but will wear over the years, and it doesn’t sear quite as hard as the Duo’s stainless pot.
Pros- Sous vide and dishwasher-safe lid at Duo pricing
- Safer vent button placed away from the steam
- Ceramic pot is easy to wipe clean
Cons- Ceramic coating can wear over time
- Sears less hard than stainless steel
- Smaller recipe community than Instant Pot
- 5. Best for Big Families
Instant Pot Duo Plus 8 qt
BeastScore 86 / 100Typically $130–$160 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)The Duo Plus 8 qt is the batch cooker. The listing says it makes up to eight servings, which means a full pot of stock, a big chili for the freezer or a whole chicken with room to spare. It adds sous vide and cake to the Duo’s functions, a clearer angled display with a progress bar and 25 guided programs. The WhisperQuiet steam release is a one-touch button and much calmer than the classic Duo. The anti-spin stainless pot stays put while you stir. The trade-offs are size and time: it takes more counter space, and a bigger pot takes longer to come up to pressure.
Pros- 8 qt for big families and freezer meals
- WhisperQuiet one-touch steam release
- Anti-spin stainless pot for easy sautéing
Cons- Big footprint on the counter
- Takes longer to reach pressure than 6 qt models
- Overkill for one or two people

“10 minutes” means after it reaches pressure. Add 10 to 15 minutes to heat up and release.
Pressure cookers need at least a cup of liquid to build steam. Check your manual for the minimum.
The silicone ring holds smells and wears out. Swap it every 12 to 18 months.
Quick answers
What is the best electric pressure cooker?+
The Instant Pot Duo 6 qt. It is simple, reliable, has a stainless steel pot and usually costs under $100. Most online pressure cooker recipes are written for it.
Instant Pot Duo vs Pro: which should I buy?+
Buy the Duo if you want the basics done well for less. Buy the Pro if you cook daily and want sous vide, baking, a quieter steam release and a dishwasher-safe lid.
Ninja vs Instant Pot: which pressure cooker is better?+
The Ninja HyperHeat has a wider pot for searing and builds pressure fast. The Instant Pot Duo is cheaper, more proven and has far more recipes online. For most people, the Duo is the safer first buy.
What size pressure cooker should I buy?+
A 6 quart model suits most households of two to five people. Go for 8 quarts if you feed six or more or cook big batches for the freezer.
Is a stainless or ceramic inner pot better?+
Stainless steel lasts longer and sears better. Ceramic-coated pots, like the Cosori’s, are easier to clean but the coating can wear over the years.
Are electric pressure cookers safe?+
Yes. Modern models have locking lids and several pressure safety systems, and they won’t open while pressurized. Keep the valve clean and replace the sealing ring when it gets worn.
