The short answer
The best self-cleaning litter box is the Whisker Litter-Robot 4. It sifts clean litter from clumps after each visit and drops the waste into a sealed drawer, so you stop scooping and just empty the drawer. It handles up to four cats, works with normal clumping litter, and the Whisker app shows waste and litter levels and logs your cat’s weight after each visit. The fence and step that come with it help cut down on tracked litter.
At about half the price, the PETKIT PuraMax 2 has a big 76-liter space, a low 7.87-inch entry for older cats and a 7-liter waste bin. Big cats and nervous cats often prefer the open-top Neakasa M1 Plus, rated for cats up to 33 lbs. The Casa Leo Leo’s Loo Too is a quiet, enclosed globe with UV odor control and no subscription, and the PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro is the cheap way in, using disposable crystal-litter trays.
Don’t buy the Litter-Robot 4 if you have kittens under 3 lbs, a very large cat, or a budget under $400. Whisker says each cat must weigh at least 3 lbs to use automatic mode safely. Its price also buys a lot of regular litter. And any automatic box is wrong for a cat that is scared of noise or movement: some cats never use one, so check the return window first.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Overall
Whisker Litter-Robot 4
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $680–$720 on Amazon (checked October 14, 2026)Litter-Robot is the brand that made this category, and the fourth version is the one to beat. Its patented sifting process separates clumps from clean litter after each use and drops them into a drawer, so each cat gets a fresh bed. The Whisker app shows waste and litter levels in real time and logs your cat’s weight each visit, which helps you spot changes early. Carbon filters (or optional OdorTrap packs) handle odor, and the included step and fence cut down on litter tracking. Owners of several cats tend to be its biggest fans. The big drawback is price.
Pros- Handles up to four cats with a fresh bed every time
- Real-time waste and litter levels plus weight logs
- Works with regular clumping litter
Cons- Costs the most here by a wide margin
- Not for cats under 3 lbs in automatic mode
- Weight readings are best on a firm floor, not carpet
- 2. Best Value
PETKIT PuraMax 2
BeastScore 89 / 100Typically $370–$400 on Amazon (checked October 14, 2026)The PuraMax 2 gets you most of the Litter-Robot experience for roughly half the price. The listing describes a 76-liter interior, a low 7.87-inch entry for older or short-legged cats, and a 7-liter waste bin that PETKIT says lasts up to 15 days. Seven infrared and four weight sensors pause cleaning when a cat comes near. The app identifies cats by weight and logs each visit. A sealed base and waterproof litter pad deal with cats that pee near the edges, and the N50 odor eliminator is in the box. It is not for kittens under 6 months, and it works on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
Pros- Low entry suits seniors and short-legged cats
- Waste bin lasts up to 15 days per PETKIT
- Odor eliminator and 2-year coverage included
Cons- Not for kittens under 6 months
- Needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for the app
- Cats over 22 lbs are outside its range
- 3. Best Open-Top
Neakasa M1 Plus
BeastScore 86 / 100Typically $380–$420 on Amazon (checked October 14, 2026)Some cats refuse a covered box, and big breeds can feel cramped in one. The M1 Plus is open-top, which Neakasa says feels safer to cats and suits large breeds moving from a normal box. It is rated for cats up to 33 lbs, the widest range here, and has a Kitten Mode for cats under 3.3 lbs. The 11.2-liter waste bin is the largest in this guide, good for 7 to 14 days. A brush strip seals the bin, so there are no deodorizer packs to buy. An open top means more litter scatter and less odor containment than an enclosed globe.
Pros- Open top for big or nervous cats
- Largest waste bin here at 11.2 L
- Kitten Mode for small cats
Cons- More litter scatter than an enclosed box
- Odor is less contained than a sealed globe
- Supports up to three cats, not four
- 4. Quietest Pick
Casa Leo Leo’s Loo Too
BeastScore 84 / 100Typically $580–$620 on Amazon (checked October 14, 2026)The Leo’s Loo Too is a sleek enclosed globe aimed at people who share small spaces with their cat. Casa Leo says it runs at about 30 dB, and it pairs a sealed 6-liter drawer with bamboo carbon filters and UV odor control. Radar motion detection, four weight sensors and anti-pinch protection pause the cycle when a cat comes near. The app tracks waste levels and your cat’s weight, and it works with Alexa and Google Assistant. It accepts cats from 1 to 20 lbs, and there are no subscription fees. The drawer is smaller than PETKIT’s or Neakasa’s, and the warranty is one year.
Pros- Quiet operation for apartments
- UV plus carbon odor control
- Works with Alexa and Google, no subscription
Cons- Smaller 6 L drawer means more emptying
- Priced close to the Litter-Robot 4
- Only a 1-year warranty
- 5. Best Budget
PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro
BeastScore 81 / 100Typically $120–$150 on Amazon (checked October 14, 2026)The ScoopFree Crystal Pro is the cheapest way to stop scooping. A rake sweeps waste into a covered trap at the end of the tray, and crystal litter absorbs urine and dries out solids, which keeps smell down. When the tray is full, you lift it out, close the lid and throw it away; PetSafe says that can be weeks without scooping or refilling. The crystals are low-tracking and nearly dust free. A built-in health counter tracks visits. The catch is running cost: it only works with PetSafe crystal trays, which you keep buying. There is no app.
Pros- Lowest upfront price by hundreds of dollars
- Crystal litter is low-dust and low-tracking
- Toss-away trays mean no scrubbing
Cons- Works only with PetSafe crystal litter trays, an ongoing cost
- No app or Wi-Fi tracking
- Rake design copes worse with heavy multi-cat use

Quick tips before you buy
Keep the old box nearby and leave the new one switched off for a few days so your cat gets used to it.

Weight sensors and scales read best on a firm, level surface, not carpet.
Some cats never take to an automatic box. Check the return policy before you buy.
