Best Smart Speakers for Music
Room-filling sound with a voice assistant

Our #1 pick is the Sonos Era 100. A smart speaker should fill the room with music, not just read the weather. We compared the best-sounding smart speakers on Amazon, from the Sonos Era 100 to the Dolby Atmos Era 300, Bose’s new Lifestyle Ultra and Amazon’s Echo Dot Max.

How we picked: we shortlist by Amazon Best Seller rank and number of ratings, then compare published specs. We don't test these products hands-on.

Sonos Era 100

The short answer

For most people, the Sonos Era 100 is the smart speaker to buy for music. It is small enough for a kitchen counter or bookshelf, but the listing says it uses two angled tweeters for real stereo separation and a 25% larger midwoofer for deeper bass. It streams over Wi-Fi, pairs over Bluetooth with a button press, takes a turntable through the Sonos Line-In Adapter, and tunes itself to your room with Trueplay. Alexa is built in, and you can add more Sonos speakers room by room.

If you want the most impressive sound, the Sonos Era 300 has six drivers firing forward, sideways and up for Dolby Atmos Music, so songs mixed in spatial audio spread around the room. Homes that mix iPhones and Android phones should look at the new Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker, which supports AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify and Bluetooth plus Alexa+. On a budget, the Echo Dot Max is the best-sounding cheap Alexa speaker, and the Sonos Roam 2 is the pick if you want to carry your music out to the patio.

Skip the Era 100 if you only want a voice assistant for timers, news and smart home control. You pay for the sound, and an Echo Dot Max does the assistant part for about half the money. It is also not the one for Apple-only homes that want Siri: Apple doesn’t sell the HomePod new on Amazon, and Sonos speakers don’t run Siri. And if your phone is your only music source and you never use voice, a good Bluetooth speaker is simpler and cheaper.

How we picked: we compared the best-known music-first smart speakers sold new by Amazon.com, read what owners say about sound, setup and apps, and checked each listing’s specs side by side. We don’t claim lab tests: these picks reflect the listings and real owner experience. Checked October 12, 2026.

Every pick, explained

Why each one made the list

What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.

  1. 1. Best Overall

    Sonos Era 100

    BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $190–$220 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)

The Era 100 is the easiest way to get properly good music from a smart speaker. The listing says a 47% faster processor drives two angled tweeters and a 25% larger midwoofer, so you get stereo from a single box and deeper bass than its size suggests. Trueplay tunes the sound to your room from the Sonos app. It plays over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or line-in with an adapter. Owners praise how full it sounds for its size and how easy it is to add a second one for stereo. The common complaints are about the Sonos app, and there is no Google Assistant or Siri.

    Pros
    • Big, clear stereo sound from a small speaker
    • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and line-in in one box
    • Best multi-room system here: add Sonos speakers room by room
    Cons
    • Some owners still complain about the Sonos app
    • No Google Assistant or Siri, only Alexa and Sonos Voice Control
    • Line-In Adapter for turntables is sold separately
  2. 2. Best Sound

    Sonos Era 300

    BeastScore 91 / 100Typically $380–$450 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)

The Era 300 is the best-sounding smart speaker you can buy on Amazon right now. The listing says it has six drivers placed around the front, sides and top that spread sound across the room and up. That design is built for Dolby Atmos Music, so spatial mixes on Apple Music or Amazon Music sound wide and tall rather than coming from one spot. A pair also works as surround speakers with a Sonos Arc or Beam (Gen 2). Owners love the scale of the sound. The trade-offs are its odd shape, a price close to twice the Era 100, and Atmos only helps with songs mixed for it.

    Pros
    • Wide, room-filling Dolby Atmos Music
    • Strongest bass and loudest output here
    • Pairs as rear surrounds with a Sonos soundbar
    Cons
    • Costs about twice as much as the Era 100
    • Unusual shape needs space around it to sound its best
    • Atmos only helps on songs mixed in spatial audio
  3. 3. Best for Mixed Phones

    Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker

    BeastScore 88 / 100Typically $280–$300 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)

The Lifestyle Ultra is Bose’s new home speaker, and it has the widest range of ways to play music here. The listing says it supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay, Google Cast and Spotify, so an iPhone and an Android phone can both send music without any extra app. Bose calls the sound TrueSpatial with CleanBass, with an adjustable EQ. An AUX input takes a turntable or CD player with no adapter, and Alexa+ is built in. You can pair two for stereo or link several around the house. It is new, so there are far fewer owner reviews than the Sonos picks, and early ratings are a little lower.

    Pros
    • AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify and Bluetooth all built in
    • AUX input with no adapter needed
    • Alexa+ voice control and adjustable EQ
    Cons
    • New model with far fewer owner reviews than Sonos
    • Smaller multi-room range than the Sonos system
    • Early owner ratings sit below the Sonos picks
  4. 4. Best Budget

    Echo Dot Max

    BeastScore 86 / 100Typically $80–$120 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)

The Echo Dot Max is the cheapest speaker here that still sounds good with music. The listing says it delivers nearly 3x the bass of the 2022 Echo Dot and automatically adapts playback to your room. It plays Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and SiriusXM, and you can pair two for stereo or group it with other Echo speakers. It is also the smartest speaker here: a built-in smart home hub, Omnisense presence and temperature triggers, Alexa+, and an eero mesh extender in the same body. Owners like it as a kitchen or bedroom speaker. It can’t match the Sonos or Bose for detail or volume in a big room.

    Pros
    • Best price for decent music sound
    • Smart home hub, Alexa+ and eero Wi-Fi built in
    • Pair two for stereo at less than one Era 100
    Cons
    • Less detail and volume than Sonos or Bose
    • No AirPlay or line-in
    • Works best if you already use Alexa
  5. 5. Best Portable

    Sonos Roam 2

    BeastScore 84 / 100Typically $150–$180 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)

The Roam 2 is a smart speaker you can carry. At home it joins your Sonos system over Wi-Fi with Alexa or Sonos Voice Control, and outside it switches to Bluetooth. The listing says it is IP67 waterproof and dustproof, runs up to 10 hours on a charge, and uses automatic Trueplay to retune itself wherever you set it down. It stands upright or lies flat. Owners like it for the bathroom, the deck and travel. It is small, so bass is limited, and it is not the right choice as the only speaker in a big living room.

    Pros
    • Waterproof and dustproof to IP67
    • Works on Wi-Fi at home and Bluetooth away
    • Auto Trueplay retunes the sound in each spot
    Cons
    • Small speaker means light bass
    • Up to 10 hours is shorter than many Bluetooth speakers
    • Not loud enough for a large living room on its own

Quick tips before you buy

Mind the placement

Keep a few inches from walls and corners. Use Trueplay or room tuning after you move it.

Pair for stereo

Two small speakers in stereo often beat one bigger speaker for music.

Match your phone

iPhone homes want AirPlay; Android homes want Google Cast or Spotify Connect.

Think about the system

Pick a brand you are happy to grow with. Sonos, Bose and Echo don’t group together.

Quick answers

What is the best smart speaker for music?+

The Sonos Era 100 for most rooms. It gives stereo sound from one compact speaker, tunes itself to your room and grows into a multi-room system. If you want the best sound regardless of price, get the Sonos Era 300.

Sonos Era 100 vs Era 300: which should I buy?+

The Era 100 is the better value and suits kitchens, bedrooms and offices. The Era 300 has six drivers and Dolby Atmos Music for a wider, taller sound in a living room, and it costs about twice as much.

Sonos vs HomePod: which is better for music?+

Both sound excellent, but Apple doesn’t sell the HomePod new on Amazon, and it works best only with Apple Music and Siri. Sonos supports almost every music service, has Alexa built in, and works with both iPhone and Android.

Do Sonos speakers work with Google Assistant?+

The Era 100 and Era 300 do not. They use Alexa or Sonos Voice Control. If you want Google Cast for music from Android phones, the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker supports it.

Is the Echo Dot Max good for music?+

Yes, for its price. Amazon says it has nearly 3x the bass of the 2022 Echo Dot, and you can pair two for stereo. It doesn’t have the detail or volume of a Sonos or Bose in a large room.

Can I connect a turntable to a smart speaker?+

Yes. The Bose Lifestyle Ultra has an AUX input. The Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 need the Sonos Line-In Adapter, sold separately. Most turntables also need a built-in or separate phono preamp.
