After years of rumors, leaks and anticipation, Apple finally unveiled its first folding phone. The iPhone Duo comes with a familiar short and wide form factor, which has been tried and tested by several Android makers, including Samsung with its own Galaxy Z Fold8.
Apple versus Samsung is as big as it gets in the world of smartphones, and we have rounded up a comprehensive specs comparison between the two foldables.
Size & Weight Comparison
Samsung’s foldable is a sizeable 53 grams lighter and is also thinner in both folded and unfolded states (201g vs 254g, and 9.7mm vs 11.3mm). The weight difference certainly sticks out in the hand. The iPhone gets a more premium titanium frame while the Galaxy sticks to aluminum. The iPhone gets a slight edge thanks to its IP68 ingress protection, while the Fold8 is IP48-rated.
Cover Display Comparison
When it comes to the cover screen, both devices are close in terms of dimensions and 120Hz refresh rates. The Fold8 has a more uniform look, while the iPhone Duo gets rounded corners. The iPhone Duo also brings a larger selfie camera cutout versus the more compact centrally placed pinhole on the Fold8.
Main Inner Display Comparison
Both phones get an expansive main display, with the iPhone Duo offering a sharper 1878 x 2670px resolution (430 ppi) and 175 cm² surface area. Apple also gets an advantage for hiding the inner camera behind the display for an uninterrupted look. Elsewhere, both feature variable 1-120Hz refresh rates and up to 3000 nits peak brightness. The iPhone Duo also boasts stylus support.
Performance & Silicon
The iPhone Duo gets the 2nm A20 Pro chipset with an extra GPU core, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite platform. Both phones come with 12GB of RAM as standard and 256GB base storage, with options going up to 1TB and 2TB.
Camera System Comparison
When it comes to cameras, both phones feature a main and ultrawide module on the back. Apple uses a 48MP 1/1.28-inch sensor on its main cam versus Samsung’s 50MP 1/1.56-inch imager. Neither phone has a dedicated optical periscope telephoto zoom module. The Galaxy holds a slight advantage in video recording, where it reaches 8K resolution at 30 fps.
Battery and Charging
Apple promises up to 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display, and 44 hours with the outer display or 24 hours of mixed use. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 4,800 mAh battery which earned a respectable 14-hour active use runtime in our testing.
In terms of charging speeds, the Duo is rated to reach 50% in 20 minutes of 60W wired charging, while Samsung supports 45W wired and 20W wireless charging. Both phones offer USB Type-C 3.2, with the Galaxy Z Fold8 offering Samsung DeX desktop mode.
