CMF Speaker S vs Speaker M: $59 or $109 Milk-Carton Speakers
Key Takeaway

The CMF Speaker S ($59) is a small, clip-on 10W speaker for bags, bikes and picnics. The Speaker M ($109) has a separate woofer and tweeter, 35W of output and a handle, so it is the better pick for a room or patio. Both share IP68, Bluetooth 6.0, Auracast, stereo pairing and USB-C audio. Pick by size and loudness, not features.

CMF, the budget brand from Nothing, launched its first Bluetooth speakers on October 12, 2026. They are called the CMF Speaker S and CMF Speaker M. Both have a boxy shape that looks like a milk carton.

The Speaker S costs $59 and the Speaker M costs $109 in the US. In the UK they cost £49 and £99. Stuff says both are available to buy now. 9to5Toys says they started landing on Amazon on October 13, and we found both listed there, sold under the CMF BY NOTHING brand.

Here is what you get, how the two differ, and which one makes sense for you.

A few notes on the numbers:

  • The 18 hours is CMF's own claim at under 50% volume. At higher volume, expect less.
  • CMF's Amazon listing says a full charge over USB-C takes about 2.5 hours for the Speaker S.
  • Stuff lists the Speaker M drivers as a 70mm woofer and 16mm tweeter. The other sources we read only give the wattage, so treat the driver sizes as reported.
  • The IP68 rating means CMF says the speakers can sit in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. Reports also mention a drop test from about 30 inches.
  • None of our sources list the weight or exact size of either model.

What both speakers share

The two models have almost the same feature list. The difference is mostly size and sound.

  • Bluetooth 6.0 with Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair and NFC tap-to-pair.
  • Dual device connection, so you can stay linked to a phone and a laptop at once.
  • Stereo Mode. Pair two of the same model for left and right channels.
  • Auracast Party Mode. Link several compatible speakers for the same music at the same time. 9to5Toys says this can include speakers from other brands that support Auracast.
  • USB-C audio. You can play sound over the cable. CMF says latency is about 60ms, which helps with games and video. Stuff and CMF's listing say the Speaker M supports lossless playback this way.
  • Nothing X app with Ultra Bass, Wide Soundstage, EQ presets and a custom EQ.
  • A knob on top for volume, play and pause, track skip and Ultra Bass.

What is new: swappable parts

This is the fun part. The front panels and knobs come off, so you can swap them. CMF is also releasing official 3D design files, so people with a 3D printer can make their own panels, knobs and add-ons.

That matters more than it sounds. If a panel gets scratched or you want a different color, you do not need a new speaker. It is also a sign CMF wants these to be personal, like a phone case.

Where each one wins

Speaker S wins on:

  • Price. At $59 it is about half the cost of the M.
  • Carrying. The hole at the top takes a strap or carabiner, so it can hang off a backpack.
  • Travel. It is the smaller of the two. Stuff says the M is about twice its size.

Speaker M wins on:

  • Loudness. 35W against 10W is a big gap.
  • Sound. A separate woofer and tweeter should give clearer highs and fuller bass than a single driver. CMF lists a 60Hz to 20kHz range.
  • Room use. The handle makes it easy to move from the desk to the kitchen or patio.

It is a tie on battery, water resistance, pairing features and colors.

Which should you buy?

  • Buy the Speaker S if you want a cheap, tough speaker for hikes, bikes, the beach or the shower, and you do not need it to fill a room.
  • Buy the Speaker M if the speaker will mostly live at home or on a patio, or if you want louder sound for small gatherings.
  • Buy two Speaker S if you like the idea of stereo. Two of them cost $118, about the same as one Speaker M plus $9, and Stereo Mode needs two of the same model.
  • Wait if sound quality is your top concern. Full reviews are not out yet. Early coverage is mostly hands-on and focuses on design.
