Two of the biggest foldable phone stories of the year landed in the same week.
On October 1, vivo announced the global version of the X Fold6, the book-style foldable it first launched in China at the end of June. Two days earlier, on September 29, MacRumors reported that Apple will open a "Get Ready" step for the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, on Monday, October 12. Pre-orders start on Friday, October 16.
So if you have been waiting for a big foldable this year, you now have two very different options for roughly the same money. Here is what each one offers, using only the official specs, and who should buy which.
The iPhone Duo dates you need
| Step | Date | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Get Ready | Monday, October 12 | Pick your color, storage, carrier, trade-in, AppleCare+ and payment on Apple's site ahead of time |
| Pre-orders | Friday, October 16, 5 a.m. PT | One-tap ordering for anyone who completed Get Ready |
| In stores | Friday, October 23 | First wave: 70+ countries, including the U.S., UK, China, Japan and Canada |
| Second wave | Friday, October 30 | 28 more countries and regions |
Reports say Apple is short on iPhone Duo supply, so stock is expected to sell out fast. If you want one at launch, do the Get Ready step on October 12. It saves you from filling in checkout details when pre-orders go live.

Where the iPhone Duo wins
The cover screen is small on purpose. At 5.4 inches, the outside screen is the same size as the old iPhone mini. When the phone is closed, you get a compact iPhone that fits in any pocket. When you open it, you get a 7.6-inch tablet-style screen with Split View multitasking in iOS 27.1. vivo went the other way, with a full-size 6.51-inch cover screen.
The fastest chip Apple has made for a phone. The A20 Pro is the same chip as in the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple says its 6-core CPU is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, the 7-core GPU is up to 40% faster, and the dual 16-core Neural Engine has twice the compute for on-device AI.
Battery life on the cover screen. Apple uses two batteries, one in each half, and rates the Duo for up to 44 hours of video on the cover screen and up to 31 hours on the inner screen. Apple does not publish battery capacity in mAh, so you can't compare it directly with vivo's 6,900mAh. We will know more once independent tests come in.
More storage and a full IP68 rating. You can get up to 2TB of storage, and the Duo is rated against dust as well as water. That matters for a phone with a hinge.
Touch ID is back. There is no Face ID. Apple put Touch ID in the side button, so the phone unlocks the same way whether it is open or closed.
One thing to check first: the iPhone Duo is eSIM-only in every country. Make sure your carrier supports eSIM before you order.
Where the vivo X Fold6 wins
More camera. The 200MP main sensor is a 1/1.4-inch Samsung HPB with OIS and ZEISS T* coating. It is backed by a 50MP ultrawide and, most importantly, a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto. The iPhone Duo has no dedicated zoom lens and uses a crop from its 48MP main camera for 2x. If you shoot portraits, concerts or anything far away, vivo has the clear hardware advantage.
Bigger screens, brighter panels. You get an 8.02-inch inner screen and a 6.51-inch cover screen, both rated for 5,000 nits peak. Using the cover screen feels like using a normal phone, which is what most people do most of the day.
Charging speed you can measure. The X Fold6 has a 6,900mAh battery with 80W wired, 40W wireless and reverse wireless charging. The global model has 100mAh less than the 7,000mAh China version, but it is still one of the biggest batteries in any foldable.
Thin when open. It is just 4.4mm thick unfolded in Prism Black (4.8mm in Horizon Blue) and 9.4–9.9mm folded, at 228–235g.
The catch: the X Fold6 is rated IPX8 and IPX9 for water, but it has no dust rating. Sand and pocket lint are what usually kill a foldable hinge. vivo also has not sold its foldables officially in the U.S., so availability depends on where you live.
Which one should you buy?
- Buy the iPhone Duo if you already use an iPhone, Mac or Apple Watch, if you want a phone that is small when closed, or if you need more than 512GB of storage. Do the Get Ready step on October 12, because launch stock is expected to be tight.
- Buy the vivo X Fold6 if you are on Android, if zoom photography matters to you, or if you want the most screen and battery for your money. Check that vivo sells it in your country before you count on it.
- Wait if you are not in a hurry. Both phones are first or new-generation hardware. Early buyers pay full price and do the beta testing, and independent reviews of hinge durability and the crease will be out within a few weeks of the October 23 iPhone Duo launch.
