DJI Osmo Action 6

The short answer

For most people, the DJI Osmo Action 6 is the action camera to buy. It has the biggest sensor here, a 1/1.1-inch square sensor, plus a variable aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.0, which DJI says gives it better footage in low light and up to 8K video. 360° HorizonSteady keeps the horizon level even if the camera rolls, it runs up to about 4 hours on a charge, and 50 GB of built-in storage means you can keep filming if you forget a card. It also pairs directly with DJI wireless mics for clean audio.

If you already own GoPro mounts or want the biggest accessory world, the GoPro HERO13 Black is the safe choice, with 5.3K video and swappable HB-Series lenses. Vloggers who film themselves should look at the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, with its Leica lens and a flip-up screen. If you want to capture everything around you and pick the angle later, the Insta360 X5 is a 360° camera with an “invisible” selfie stick effect. On a budget, the DJI Osmo Action 4 still shoots great 4K at 120 fps for under $200.

Skip the Osmo Action 6 if you mostly film in daylight and want to spend less. The extra sensor size matters most at dusk, indoors and underwater, and an Action 4 or Ace Pro 2 looks very close in bright sun. Also skip it if you have a drawer full of GoPro gear and rely on GoPro’s Quik app: the HERO13 slots straight in.

How we picked: we compared the most popular action cameras on Amazon from the brands’ own stores, read what owners report after real trips (the praise and the complaints), and checked each listing’s sensor, video modes, waterproofing, battery and what comes in the box. We don’t claim hands-on tests. Listings and prices checked October 2026.

Why each one made the list

What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.

  1. 1. Best Overall

    DJI Osmo Action 6

    BeastScore 93 / 100Typically $400–$450 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)

The Action 6 is the biggest step up in action cameras in years. The listing says it has an all-new 1/1.1-inch square sensor and a variable aperture (f/2.0–f/4.0), which is rare in an action camera and helps both in dim light and bright sun. The square sensor also lets you reframe 4K into vertical or horizontal crops for social media. 360° HorizonSteady and RockSteady 3.0 keep footage level and smooth. DJI rates it for up to 4 hours of shooting with a cold-resistant design, adds 50 GB of built-in storage, and lets it pair two DJI mic transmitters with no receiver. It is pricier than the Action 5 Pro, and DJI’s mounts don’t match GoPro’s huge accessory range.

    Pros
    • Largest sensor and variable aperture for low light
    • Up to 4 hours of battery, built for the cold
    • 50 GB built-in storage plus direct DJI mic pairing
    Cons
    • Costs more than older DJI and Insta360 models
    • DJI’s magnetic mounts don’t fit GoPro accessories without adapters
    • Max features like 8K make huge files
  2. 2. Best GoPro

    GoPro HERO13 Black

    BeastScore 90 / 100Typically $400–$450 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)

The HERO13 Black is the most complete GoPro yet, and the one to get if you already own GoPro mounts. The listing says it shoots 5.3K video at 60 fps and 27MP photos, and it is waterproof to 33 feet without a case. The big addition is the HB-Series lenses, which the camera detects automatically, including an Ultra Wide Lens Mod for extreme POV shots. Burst Slo-Mo records short clips slowed to 13x. GoPro’s accessory world is still the biggest of any action camera brand. Owners praise the stabilization and color. Its smaller sensor trails the DJI and Insta360 picks at night, and you need the GoPro Quik app for full features. This listing is the Polar White version.

    Pros
    • Huge ecosystem of mounts and accessories
    • Swappable HB-Series lenses, auto-detected
    • Sharp 5.3K60 video with strong stabilization
    Cons
    • Weaker in low light than DJI and Insta360’s bigger sensors
    • Needs the GoPro Quik app for full functionality
    • Lens mods add a lot to the cost
  3. 3. Best for Vlogging

    Insta360 Ace Pro 2

    BeastScore 89 / 100Typically $300–$340 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)

The Ace Pro 2 is built for people who appear in their own videos. Its 2.5-inch flip touchscreen tilts up so you can frame yourself, which no GoPro does. The listing says it pairs a 1/1.3-inch 8K sensor with a lens co-engineered with Leica and a dual AI chip that powers PureVideo, a low-light mode now up to 4K60. A snap-on wind guard helps audio on bikes and motorcycles, and it is waterproof to 39 feet. Owners like the image quality for the price and the AI editing in the app. The trade-offs: battery life is shorter than the DJI picks, and the flip screen is one more thing to protect in a crash.

    Pros
    • Flip-up screen makes self-filming easy
    • Strong low-light video for the price
    • Wind guard for cleaner audio
    Cons
    • Shorter battery life than the DJI Action 6
    • Flip screen is exposed in crashes
    • Best features rely on the Insta360 app
  4. 4. Best 360 Camera

    Insta360 X5

    BeastScore 88 / 100Typically $450–$500 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)

A 360° camera records everything around it, then you choose the angle afterward. The X5 is Insta360’s flagship, with dual 1/1.28-inch sensors shooting 8K30 360° video. Mount it on a selfie stick and the stick disappears in the final video, so you get drone-like third-person shots while skiing or riding. FlowState stabilization and 360° Horizon Lock keep footage level through flips. The listing highlights replaceable lenses you can swap in seconds if you scratch one, a 3-hour battery and a four-mic wind guard. InstaFrame mode also saves a ready-to-share flat video. The catch is editing: 360 footage takes time to reframe, and the final flat video is softer than a traditional 8K action cam.

    Pros
    • Captures every angle, choose the shot later
    • Invisible selfie stick for third-person views
    • Replaceable lenses and a 3-hour battery
    Cons
    • Reframing 360 footage takes time
    • Flat output is softer than a regular action cam
    • Protruding lenses need care
  5. 5. Best Budget

    DJI Osmo Action 4

    BeastScore 86 / 100Typically $170–$200 on Amazon (checked October 13, 2026)

The Action 4 is an older model, which is exactly why it is a bargain now. It still has a 1/1.3-inch sensor, the same size as the much newer Ace Pro 2, so low-light footage holds up well. The listing says it shoots 4K at 120 fps with a 155° ultra-wide view, records 10-bit D-Log M for color grading, and is waterproof to 59 feet. The battery is rated for up to 150 minutes and works down to -4°F, and DJI’s magnetic quick-release makes switching mounts fast. Recent updates added Pre-Rec, which saves footage from before you hit record. It tops out at 4K, has no built-in storage, and lacks the Action 6’s horizon lock and variable aperture.

    Pros
    • 1/1.3" sensor and 4K120 for under $200
    • Waterproof to 59 ft without a case
    • Fast magnetic mounting and Pre-Rec feature
    Cons
    • Tops out at 4K, no 8K or 5.3K
    • Shorter battery than the Action 6
    • Older model with fewer new features

Quick tips before you buy

Carry a spare battery

High frame rates and cold weather drain batteries fast. A second battery or a charging case saves the day.

Check the depth rating

Most action cams are waterproof to 33–59 ft on their own. For scuba diving, buy the brand’s dive case.

Use a fast memory card

High-bitrate 4K and 8K need a fast, high-endurance microSD card or the camera may stop recording.

Mount it where it moves less

Helmet and chest mounts give smoother, more natural footage than handlebars.

Quick answers

GoPro vs DJI: which action camera is better?+

For image quality, especially in low light, the DJI Osmo Action 6 wins thanks to its larger sensor and variable aperture. GoPro’s HERO13 Black wins on accessories, lens mods and its long-standing mount system. Pick DJI for the best footage and GoPro if you already own GoPro gear.

Is the GoPro HERO13 Black worth it?+

Yes if you want GoPro’s mount ecosystem and HB-Series lens mods, or you are upgrading from an older GoPro. If you are new to action cameras, the DJI Osmo Action 6 or Insta360 Ace Pro 2 give you better low-light video for similar or less money.

What is the best budget action camera?+

The DJI Osmo Action 4. It has a large 1/1.3-inch sensor, shoots 4K at 120 fps and is waterproof to 59 feet, often for under $200. Very cheap no-name cameras exist, but their stabilization and low-light footage are far worse.

Should I get a 360 camera or a regular action camera?+

Get a 360 camera like the Insta360 X5 if you want third-person shots, fast action you can’t aim, or the freedom to choose angles later. Get a regular action camera if you want the sharpest footage straight out of the camera with little editing.

Which action camera is best for vlogging?+

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2, thanks to its flip-up screen for framing yourself and a wind guard for clearer audio. The DJI Osmo Action 6 is a strong alternative because it pairs directly with DJI wireless mics.

Are action cameras waterproof?+

Most are waterproof without a case: the GoPro HERO13 Black to 33 feet, the Ace Pro 2 to 39 feet and the DJI Osmo Action 4 to 59 feet, per their listings. For deeper diving, use the maker’s dive housing.
