Samsung T9

The short answer

For creators who move big files every day, the Samsung T9 is the portable SSD to buy. It is rated for up to 2,000 MB/s read and write over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, about twice as fast as most portable drives, and Samsung says its thermal design keeps that speed up during long transfers. It is small enough for a jacket pocket and works with Macs, PCs, cameras and game consoles.

If you want a drive that survives a bag, a beach or a fall, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is the best rugged pick, with IP65 water and dust resistance and a 3-meter drop rating; it is also one of the most-reviewed drives on Amazon. The Crucial X10 matches the T9’s headline speed with the same rugged rating. The Samsung T7 Shield is the rugged Samsung option, and the Crucial X9 is the value choice for backups and students.

Skip the T9 if your computer has no USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port. Most Macs and many laptops don’t, so they will run the T9 at about 1,000 MB/s, the same as the cheaper SanDisk, T7 Shield or X9. Check your port before paying for speed you can’t use. Also note SSD prices are higher than usual right now, so buy only the capacity you need.

Every pick, explained

Why each one made the list

What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.

  1. 1. Best Overall

    Samsung T9

    BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $230–$270 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)

The T9 is Samsung’s fastest portable drive, and it is built for long jobs. The listing rates it at up to 2,000 MB/s read and write, and its Dynamic Thermal Guard is designed to keep speeds up during long exports instead of slowing down when it gets hot, a common problem with fast drives. Samsung makes the NAND, DRAM and firmware in-house, and the Magician app handles firmware updates, encryption and drive health. It works with PCs, Macs, cameras and consoles. The catch: you need a Gen 2x2 port for the top speed, and it costs more per terabyte than the others.

    Pros
    • Up to 2,000 MB/s on a Gen 2x2 port
    • Designed to hold speed during long transfers
    • Samsung Magician for updates and encryption
    Cons
    • Most Macs run it at about half speed
    • Pricier per terabyte than the SanDisk or Crucial X9
    • No IP water or dust rating on the listing
  2. 2. Best Rugged

    SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

    BeastScore 91 / 100Typically $270–$310 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)

The SanDisk Extreme is the drive photographers clip to a bag and forget about. The listing gives up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, which is the full speed most laptops and Macs can use. It is rated IP65 for water and dust and for drops up to 3 meters, and the rubber shell has a carabiner loop. It also offers 256-bit AES hardware encryption with password protection. It is one of the most-reviewed external drives on Amazon. The trade-offs: half the T9’s top speed on Gen 2x2 machines, and this listing is the 2TB, so it costs more up front.

    Pros
    • IP65 and a 3-meter drop rating
    • Carabiner loop for bags and belts
    • Hardware encryption with password protection
    Cons
    • Half the T9’s speed on Gen 2x2 ports
    • This listing is the 2TB, a bigger up-front cost
    • Older design than the newer 2,000 MB/s models
  3. 3. Best Fast + Rugged

    Crucial X10

    BeastScore 89 / 100Typically $240–$280 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)

The X10 combines the T9’s speed class with the SanDisk’s toughness. The listing rates it at up to 2,100 MB/s read, slightly above the T9 on paper, and gives it IP65 water and dust resistance plus a drop rating of 9.8 feet (3 meters). It is very compact, connects over USB-C (with USB-A support), and the listing names Windows, Mac, iPad Pro, Chromebook, Android, PS5 and Xbox. It comes with three months of Mylio Photos and Acronis True Image. Owners like the size. The catches: Crucial’s software is thinner than Samsung’s, and it is a newer drive with a smaller owner base.

    Pros
    • Up to 2,100 MB/s read on a Gen 2x2 port
    • IP65 and 3-meter drop rating
    • Very small and light for its speed
    Cons
    • Thinner management software than Samsung Magician
    • Newer drive with fewer owner reviews
    • Needs a Gen 2x2 port for full speed
  4. 4. Best for Mac Users

    Samsung T7 Shield

    BeastScore 88 / 100Typically $250–$290 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)

Most Macs top out at USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds, so the T9’s extra speed is wasted on them. The T7 Shield gives Mac and iPad users the full 1,050 MB/s they can actually use, in a rubber-coated body rated IP65 and drop resistant to 9.8 feet. You still get Samsung’s Magician software for firmware updates and drive health, and capacities from 1TB to 4TB. Owners like how cool and compact it stays. The trade-off is price: at the time of checking, this 1TB costs close to the T9, which is faster on PCs with a Gen 2x2 port, so compare before you buy.

    Pros
    • Full speed on Macs, iPads and most laptops
    • IP65 and a 9.8 ft drop rating
    • Samsung Magician software included
    Cons
    • Priced close to the faster T9 right now
    • Half the T9’s speed on Gen 2x2 PCs
  5. 5. Best Budget

    Crucial X9

    BeastScore 86 / 100Typically $150–$180 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)

The X9 is the cheapest real-brand way to get SSD speed in your pocket. The listing gives up to 1,050 MB/s, the same top speed as the SanDisk and T7 Shield, plus IP55 water and dust resistance and a 7.5-foot (2-meter) drop rating. It connects over USB-C with USB-A support, and Crucial lists Windows, Mac, iPad Pro, Chromebook, Android, PS4, PS5 and Xbox. It includes three months of Mylio Photos and Acronis True Image. For backups, school work and game storage, it does the same job as pricier drives. The trade-offs: a lower rugged rating and thinner software.

    Pros
    • Lowest price here for a 1TB, 1,050 MB/s drive
    • Wide compatibility: consoles, iPad and Android
    • IP55 and 2-meter drop rating
    Cons
    • Lower rugged rating than the X10 or SanDisk
    • Basic management software

Quick tips before you buy

Check your port first

2,000 MB/s drives need USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. Most Macs and many laptops top out near 1,000 MB/s.

Use the cable in the box

A cheap phone cable can drop a fast SSD to USB 2 speeds. Use the included cable or a rated 10Gbps or 20Gbps one.

Rugged ratings matter for travel

IP65 means dust-tight and splash-proof. For bags, boats and shoots, pick an IP65 drive.

Keep a second backup

A portable SSD is a great working drive, but keep important files in a second place too, like the cloud.

Quick answers

What is the best portable SSD?+

The Samsung T9 for speed, if your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port. For Macs and most laptops, the SanDisk Extreme or Samsung T7 Shield gives the full speed you can use, with better rugged ratings.

Samsung T9 vs T7 Shield: which should I buy?+

The T9 is about twice as fast on a Gen 2x2 port and holds speed during long transfers. The T7 Shield is rugged (IP65) and runs at full speed on Macs. On a Mac, buy the T7 Shield; on a Gen 2x2 PC, buy the T9.

Do portable SSDs work with iPhone and iPad?+

Yes, with USB-C iPhones and iPads you can plug a portable SSD in directly and use the Files app. Recent Pro iPhones can also record video straight to an external drive. Speeds depend on the device’s port.

Can I use a portable SSD with a PS5 or Xbox?+

Yes, for storing games. You can play older-generation games from it and keep current-gen games on it to copy back quickly. Current-gen games generally need internal storage to play.

How long do portable SSDs last?+

Usually many years of normal use. SSDs wear by how much data is written, and a typical user writes far less than the drive’s limit. Physical damage and loss are bigger risks, which is why rugged ratings and a second backup matter.

Portable SSD vs external hard drive: which is better?+

SSDs are many times faster, smaller and have no moving parts, so they survive drops better. External hard drives still cost less per terabyte, which makes them fine for large, rarely used backups.
