The short answer
For most people who train hard, the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are the workout earbuds to buy. Flexible ear hooks lock them in place through sprints, burpees and heavy lifts, and Beats says the fit came out of 1,500 hours of athlete testing. They add real active noise cancelling for a loud gym, a heart rate sensor in each bud, up to 45 hours of battery with the case, and a case that charges on a Qi pad. They work with both iPhone and Android.
If you want ear hooks and noise cancelling for far less, get the Soundcore Sport X20. Its hooks rotate and extend, so it fits more ear shapes than most. Swimmers, surfers and anyone who trains in the rain should look at the JBL Endurance Peak 3 or JBL Endurance Race 2, which are both IP68 dust and waterproof. And if you just need a cheap pair for the gym bag that won’t hurt to lose, the JLab Go Air Sport costs about the same as a protein tub.
Skip the Powerbeats Pro 2 if you hate things around your ears, wear glasses all day, or mostly run outside near traffic. Ear hooks can press on glasses arms, and the case is still bigger than a normal earbud case. Runners who need to hear cars may prefer open-ear buds (see our open-ear guide). And IPX4 means sweat and rain are fine, but they are not built for the pool; pick a JBL for that.
How we picked: we compared the most popular workout earbuds on Amazon and what real buyers say about them, especially fit, sweat survival and battery after months of use. Then we checked each product’s listing and specs side by side to rank the top 5. We don’t claim hands-on lab tests: these picks reflect real owner experience and what the listings say. Checked October 2026.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Overall
Beats Powerbeats Pro 2
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $170–$250 on Amazon (checked October 11, 2026)The Powerbeats Pro 2 are the most complete workout earbuds you can buy on Amazon. The ear hooks are the main reason: they hold the buds in place through jumps and sprints without you pushing them back in. The listing adds active noise cancelling tuned for gyms, Transparency mode for outdoor runs, and heart rate sensors that sample over 100 times a second, so you can track effort without a chest strap. Battery is up to 45 hours with the case, and a 5-minute charge gives about 1.5 hours. Owners love the fit and battery; the common complaints are price and an IPX4 rating that stops short of swimming.
Pros- Ear hooks that stay put through any workout
- Strong ANC and Transparency for gym or road
- Built-in heart rate, works with fitness apps
Cons- Costs the most here by a wide margin
- IPX4 only: fine for sweat, not for swimming
- Hooks can feel tight with glasses
- 2. Best Value
Soundcore Sport X20
BeastScore 89 / 100Typically $60–$80 on Amazon (checked October 11, 2026)The Sport X20 copies the Powerbeats idea for about a third of the price, and it adds a clever twist. The listing says the ear hooks rotate up to 30° and extend 4 mm, so you can set them to your own ears instead of hoping one shape fits. Adaptive noise cancelling cuts down clanging plates and gym music, and 11 mm drivers with BassUp give the punchy sound most people want for training. Anker’s SweatGuard design is built to keep sweat and water out, and the soundcore app adds EQ and HearID. Owners rate the fit highly; the trade-offs are a bulky case and no heart rate sensor.
Pros- Adjustable hooks fit small and large ears
- Real ANC for the price
- Bass-heavy sound that suits workout playlists
Cons- Charging case is bulky in a pocket
- No heart rate or fitness tracking
- 3. Best Waterproof
JBL Endurance Peak 3
BeastScore 87 / 100Typically $80–$100 on Amazon (checked October 11, 2026)The Endurance Peak 3 is the pair to buy if your workouts get wet. The listing says it is IP68 dust and waterproof and can handle 30 minutes at 1.5 meters in salt or fresh water, which is far beyond the IPX4 of most sport buds. Battery is huge: 10 hours in the buds and 50 hours total with the case. Ear hooks keep them secure, a 10 mm driver gives JBL’s bass-forward sound, and Ambient Aware and TalkThru let you hear traffic or a coach. There is no active noise cancelling, and owners say the case is large and the hooks take a few days to feel natural.
Pros- IP68: handles rain, mud and a dunk in the sea
- Long battery: 10 hours per charge, 50 total
- Ambient Aware for safer road runs
Cons- No active noise cancelling for loud gyms
- Big case is not pocket friendly
- Owners rate it a notch below the Soundcore
- 4. Best Without Ear Hooks
JBL Endurance Race 2
BeastScore 85 / 100Typically $70–$100 on Amazon (checked October 11, 2026)Not everyone gets on with ear hooks, especially if you wear glasses or a cap. The Endurance Race 2 uses a soft wing enhancer with Twistlock: you twist the bud in and the wing braces against your ear for a secure seal. The listing says the buds are IP68 dust and waterproof, the case is IPX2, and battery is 12 hours per charge with 48 hours total with ANC off. You also get active noise cancelling and Smart Ambient. JBL warns to dry the buds before charging, since the case is not waterproof. Wing tips are less locked-in than hooks for heavy jumping, so this is a better pick for runs and lifting than for box jumps.
Pros- Small, hook-free design that works with glasses
- IP68 buds plus ANC at a mid-range price
- Fast charge: 10 minutes gives 4 hours
Cons- Wing tips are less secure than hooks for jumps
- Buds must be dried before charging
- 5. Best Budget
JLab Go Air Sport
BeastScore 82 / 100Typically $20–$30 on Amazon (checked October 11, 2026)The Go Air Sport proves you don’t need to spend much to get earbuds that stay in. The listing says the ear hooks fit even small ears, the buds are IP55 sweat and dust resistant, and you get 8+ hours per charge and 32+ hours total. Three EQ modes (Signature, Balanced, Bass Boost) switch with a tap, no app needed, and you can use either bud alone. The case has a built-in USB cable, so there is nothing extra to pack. The sound is thinner than the Soundcore or JBLs, there is no noise cancelling, and owners say the case feels cheap, but at this price that is a fair deal.
Pros- Very low price for a secure ear-hook fit
- Long battery and a case with a built-in cable
- EQ modes on the buds, no app required
Cons- No noise cancelling
- Sound and build are a clear step down

Quick answers
What are the best earbuds for working out?+
The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. The ear hooks keep them in place through any workout, and they add ANC, heart rate tracking and up to 45 hours of battery with the case. The Soundcore Sport X20 is the best cheaper option.
Which earbuds don’t fall out when running?+
Earbuds with ear hooks are the most secure: the Powerbeats Pro 2, Soundcore Sport X20, JBL Endurance Peak 3 and JLab Go Air Sport all use them. Wing-tip buds like the JBL Endurance Race 2 also stay in well once you find the right tip size.
Are Powerbeats Pro 2 worth it?+
Yes, if you train several times a week and want one pair for the gym and daily life. You get a secure fit, strong ANC, heart rate and very long battery. If you only need a secure fit, the Soundcore Sport X20 does that for much less.
Can I swim with workout earbuds?+
Only with IP68 earbuds, and even then Bluetooth does not work well underwater. The JBL Endurance Peak 3 and Race 2 are IP68 and survive a dunk. IPX4 buds like the Powerbeats Pro 2 handle sweat and rain but should not go in the pool.
Do Powerbeats Pro 2 work with Android?+
Yes. On Android the Beats app adds one-touch pairing, heart rate monitoring, custom controls and battery widgets. iPhone users also get automatic switching, Find My and hands-free Siri.
Is noise cancelling useful at the gym?+
Yes. It cuts down music from the speakers, clanging plates and chatter, so you can play your own music at a lower, safer volume. For outdoor runs, switch to Transparency or Ambient mode so you can hear traffic.
What are the best cheap workout earbuds?+
The JLab Go Air Sport. It has ear hooks, IP55 sweat resistance and over 30 hours of total battery for a low price. It skips noise cancelling, and the sound is basic, but the fit is secure.
