Dyson Airwrap vs Shark FlexStyle
Is the Dyson worth the extra?

The short answer
For most people, the Shark FlexStyle IonCurl (HD840) is the better buy. It dries and styles with one tool, has Coanda airflow that wraps hair around the barrel for you, and costs about a third of a Dyson. The listing says it has four heat levels up to 203°F and a Scalp Shield mode that drops to a cooler setting. For daily blow-dries and soft curls, it does the job at a price most people can accept.
The Dyson Airwrap i.d. and Co-anda2x are worth the money only for specific people. The i.d. connects to the MyDyson app to build a hair profile and stores your wrap, style and cold-shot settings for repeatable curls, but it is built for straight and wavy hair. The Co-anda2x is Dyson’s most powerful model, with a Gen2 motor, 2x the air pressure and a new air straightener attachment. If you want the cheapest Shark, the classic FlexStyle HD430 works for all hair types, and the FlexFusion adds a ceramic straightener style for wet-to-dry results.
Skip the Dyson if price matters more than app features, or if you have curly or coily hair, since the Airwrap i.d. is made for straight and wavy hair. Skip the Shark FlexStyle if you want a polished, long-established tool with the strongest air pressure and you do not mind paying for it. How we picked: we compared the two most popular lines on Amazon, read each listing and what owners say, and judged them on power, heat control, hair type fit and value. We do not run hands-on tests. Checked October 2026.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best for Most People
Shark FlexStyle IonCurl HD840
BeastScore 91 / 100Typically $240–$260 on Amazon (checked October 18, 2026)The newest FlexStyle is the best balance of price and features. It is an ion-powered dryer and multi-styler that dries, curls and smooths with one tool. The listing says its Coanda wrap curling has a stronger wrap force than before, so the left barrel curls counterclockwise and the right curls clockwise, giving each side of your head a curl in the right direction. A new AirSet button pauses airflow mid-style or holds down for a cool burst to set your look. Scalp Shield mode instantly drops to a cooler, scalp-safe setting, and there are four heat levels, topping out at 203°F. It costs a fraction of a Dyson. It has no app, and owners should expect a heavier, bulkier feel than a hair dryer.
Pros- Costs about a third of a Dyson Airwrap
- Scalp Shield mode and four heat levels up to 203°F
- AirSet button pauses airflow or adds a cool burst
Cons- No app or personalized styling profile
- Not as established as the Dyson for curl consistency
- Several attachments to store and swap
- 2. Best Smart Features
Dyson Airwrap i.d.
BeastScore 90 / 100Typically $640–$700 on Amazon (checked October 18, 2026)The Airwrap i.d. is the Dyson built for people who want the same curl every time. A Bluetooth link to the MyDyson app asks six questions about your hair type and length, builds a personalized styling profile, and the tool stores your wrap, style and cold-shot settings. The listing says it is powered by the Dyson digital motor V9, a 13-blade impeller that spins at up to 110,000 rpm, and that intelligent heat control keeps temperatures under 302°F. It offers six-in-one versatility: dry, curl, wave, shape and smooth. Dyson says it is engineered for straight and wavy hair, so people with tighter curls may prefer a Shark. It is the most expensive item here by far.
Pros- App-based personalization stores your preferred settings
- Strong airflow and intelligent heat control under 302°F
- Six-in-one versatility with a premium build
Cons- Costs roughly two and a half times the Shark FlexStyle
- Built for straight and wavy hair, per Dyson
- The app is needed for the full smart experience
- 3. Most Powerful
Dyson Airwrap Co-anda2x
BeastScore 89 / 100Typically $740–$760 on Amazon (checked October 18, 2026)The Co-anda2x is the top of Dyson’s range. The listing says it is 30% more powerful than before, with 2x the air pressure from the Gen2 motor and full hair dryer performance. A new Air straightener 2x attachment uses aerothermal plates to straighten from wet to dry in as little as one pass, and stronger Coanda airflow makes wrapping easier and tighter. The i.d. curl sequence senses movement to wrap hair automatically and adapt heat, airflow and timings, and intelligent attachments remember your preferences, with Bluetooth and the MyDyson app. It is a 6-in-1: dry, curl, wave, straighten, smooth and volumize. It is the most expensive option here, and the extra power only matters if you want the straightener or the strongest dry.
Pros- Most powerful Airwrap with the Gen2 motor
- Adds an air straightener 2x attachment
- Intelligent attachments adjust heat and airflow for you
Cons- The most expensive pick, at about three times the Shark
- Overkill if you only blow-dry and curl
- App is needed for personalization
- 4. Best Budget Dyson Alternative
Shark FlexStyle HD430
BeastScore 87 / 100Typically $220–$240 on Amazon (checked October 18, 2026)The HD430 is the original affordable FlexStyle, and it remains the cheapest way to get an air styler. The listing says you rotate the dryer to turn it into a multi-styler, and the box includes two 1.25-inch auto-wrap curlers with Coanda technology, an oval brush, a paddle brush and a styling concentrator. It has 4 heat and 3 airflow settings, and Shark says it measures and regulates temperature 1000 times per second. It is lightweight at just over 1.5 lbs, and designed for straight, wavy, curly and coily hair, which is a wider range than the Airwrap i.d. It has no scalp shield or app. If you want to try air styling without a big spend, start here.
Pros- Cheapest way into air styling
- Designed for straight, wavy, curly and coily hair
- Includes two curlers, two brushes and a concentrator
Cons- No Scalp Shield mode or app
- Older design than the HD840
- Curls need more manual practice than the Dyson i.d.
- 5. Best for Wet-to-Dry Styling
Shark FlexFusion HD641
BeastScore 86 / 100Typically $240–$260 on Amazon (checked October 18, 2026)The FlexFusion is a different idea from the Dyson. It fuses powerful air with a heat-controlled ceramic to give blowouts and hot-tool results with no heat damage, in wet-to-dry mode, per the listing. The HD641 comes with auto-wrap curlers and a Wet or Dry Fusion Brush that brings body, bounce and shine to wet or dry hair. Scalp Shield lets you instantly adjust temperatures to protect your scalp from extreme heat, and the listing says it was developed by dermatologists and approved by stylists. It is best if you want to do blowouts and also re-style dry hair on non-wash days. It costs about the same as the HD840, so choose the HD840 for curls and the FlexFusion for blowouts.
Pros- Ceramic plus air handles wet-to-dry styling
- Wet or Dry Fusion Brush for blowouts and re-styling
- Scalp Shield mode for cooler scalp-safe heat
Cons- Costs about the same as the IonCurl HD840
- Curls are not its main strength
- Several attachments to store

Quick tips before you buy
Air stylers work best on towel-dried, damp hair. Soaking wet hair takes much longer to dry and curl.
Check the listing for the hair types each model is made for. The Airwrap i.d. is for straight and wavy hair.
A burst of cool air at the end sets curls and adds shine. Hold each section for a few seconds.
Air stylers have a learning curve. Buy from a seller with an easy return window in case it is not for you.
Quick answers
Is the Dyson Airwrap worth it over the Shark FlexStyle?+
It depends on what you value. The Dyson has an app, stored settings and strong airflow, but costs about two and a half to three times as much. The Shark FlexStyle does most of what people use daily, so many shoppers find it the better value.
Which one is better for curly hair?+
The Shark FlexStyle HD430 is listed for straight, wavy, curly and coily hair. Dyson says the Airwrap i.d. is engineered for straight and wavy hair. If you have tight curls, check each listing and the return policy first.
Does the Shark FlexStyle really work like an Airwrap?+
It uses the same Coanda airflow idea. Air pulls hair around the barrel, so you do not need a hot clamp. The wrap strength and finish differ by model, so read the listings and owner reports for the model you pick.
What is the difference between FlexStyle and FlexFusion?+
FlexStyle is an air-only multi-styler with Coanda curlers. FlexFusion fuses air with a heat-controlled ceramic and adds a Wet or Dry Fusion Brush, which is better for blowouts and re-styling dry hair.
Is the Dyson Airwrap i.d. different from the Co-anda2x?+
Yes. The i.d. is app-enabled and made for straight and wavy hair. The Co-anda2x adds the Gen2 motor with 2x the air pressure, 30% more power, a new air straightener 2x attachment and a stronger Coanda airflow.
Do air stylers damage hair?+
They use less heat than a hot curling iron. Dyson says its heat control stays under 302°F, and the Shark HD840 tops out at 203°F. Any tool can cause damage if you overuse it, so use a heat setting that matches your hair.
Can an air styler replace my hair dryer?+
Yes, most of these models work as a dryer and a styler. The Co-anda2x is described as having full hair dryer performance, and the Shark FlexStyle rotates into a dryer. Drying takes longer on thick hair than on a regular dryer.
