The short answer
For most people, the Fire HD 10 is the one to get. Its 10.1-inch Full HD (1080p) screen is the big upgrade over the Fire HD 8, and it lasts up to 13 hours. It is the best Fire tablet for Netflix, Prime Video and reading magazines on the couch.
Get the Fire HD 8 if you want something lighter for travel or for a child, with the same 13-hour battery and 64 GB of storage. Get the Fire Max 11 if you want the nicest one: a sharper 11-inch screen, an aluminum body, Wi-Fi 6 and an optional keyboard case. The Fire 7 is the smallest and cheapest, best as a simple e-book and video player.
Fire tablets are among the Amazon devices discounted most during Prime Big Deal Days (October 6–7, 2026), and sale prices move around. During deals the Fire HD 10 can cost about the same as, or even less than, the Fire HD 8, so compare both prices before you buy.

Who wins where
The winner of each category, based on published specs and Amazon owner reviews. Pick the rounds that matter to you.
- Round 1
Screen
Fire Max 11 winsThe Fire Max 11 has the sharpest screen: 11 inches at 2000 x 1200. The Fire HD 10 is close behind with a 10.1-inch 1080p screen, which is plenty for movies. The Fire HD 8 is plain HD, and the Fire 7 is the most basic. If you watch a lot, skip the 7 and 8.
- Round 2
Speed
Fire Max 11 winsThe Max 11 is Amazon’s most powerful tablet, with an octa-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and Wi-Fi 6. The Fire HD 10 is also octa-core and 25% faster than the last HD 10. The HD 8 is hexa-core with 4 GB. The Fire 7, with 2 GB of RAM, is noticeably slower when you switch apps.
- Round 3
Battery
Fire Max 11 winsThe Max 11 lasts up to 14 hours. The Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 8 are rated up to 13 hours, so there is little difference. The Fire 7 is rated up to 10 hours, still enough for a long flight.
- Round 4
Easiest to carry
Fire HD 8 winsThe Fire 7 is smaller, but the Fire HD 8 is the best travel size: small enough for one hand and a backpack pocket, with a bigger screen, 64 GB of storage and twice the RAM of the Fire 7.
- Round 5
Fire HD 8 vs Fire HD 10
Fire HD 10 winsThis is the choice most people make. The HD 10 gets you a bigger, sharper 1080p screen, an octa-core chip and stylus support. The HD 8 gets you more storage (64 GB) and a lighter tablet. For watching shows, the HD 10 is worth the small step up.
- Round 6
Build and extras
Fire Max 11 winsOnly the Max 11 has an aluminum body, and Amazon says it is 3x as durable as the iPad 10th gen in tumble tests. It also works with an optional keyboard case and stylus for light work. The HD 10 works with the stylus too.

Quick tips before you buy
For movies, 10 inches is a big step up. For travel and small hands, 8 inches is easier.
Fire tablets use Amazon’s Appstore. Netflix, Disney+, Zoom and Minecraft are there; some Google apps are not.
Every Fire tablet takes a microSD card up to 1 TB, so you can buy less storage and add more cheaply.
During Prime Big Deal Days, the HD 10 can cost close to the HD 8. Check both before you buy.
Quick answers
What is the difference between the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10?+
The Fire HD 10 has a bigger 10.1-inch Full HD (1080p) screen and an octa-core processor. The Fire HD 8 has an 8-inch HD screen and a hexa-core processor, but it is lighter and the model we link has 64 GB of storage. Both last up to 13 hours.
Is the Fire Max 11 worth it over the Fire HD 10?+
Only if you want the sharpest screen, an aluminum build, Wi-Fi 6 or a keyboard case for typing. For streaming and reading, the Fire HD 10 does almost as well for less.
Which Fire tablet is best for kids?+
The Fire HD 8 is the best size for kids. Amazon also sells Kids versions with a kid-proof case, a 2-year worry-free guarantee and Amazon Kids+. See our best kids tablets guide.
Can you get Google Play on a Fire tablet?+
No, not officially. Fire tablets use the Amazon Appstore, which has the big streaming, social and gaming apps, but not every Google app.
Is the Fire 7 still worth buying?+
Only as a small, cheap tablet for reading, audiobooks and simple videos. With 2 GB of RAM it is slower than the others, so the Fire HD 8 is a better buy for most people if the price gap is small.
