The short answer
If you want smart lights for your whole home that turn on every time, Philips Hue is still the brand to buy, and the Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 is the bulb to start with. It works over Bluetooth out of the box, then joins a Hue Bridge for automations, away-from-home control and a stable connection that doesn’t clog your Wi-Fi. Hue has the deepest support across Alexa, Google, Apple Home and Matter.
If you mostly want fun color and effects for less money, Govee wins. The Govee A19 Color bulb costs a fraction of a Hue color bulb and connects straight to Wi-Fi with no hub. Behind the TV, the Govee TV Backlight T2 uses two cameras to match the colors on screen with no extra box, while Hue’s Play Gradient Lightstrip needs both a Bridge and a Sync Box. Hue’s newer Essential A19 narrows the price gap if you want Hue quality on a budget.
Who should *not* buy Hue? Anyone who just wants a couple of color bulbs in a bedroom or a gaming room. You will pay a lot more per bulb, and the best features need a Bridge. Who should skip Govee? Anyone planning 20+ bulbs across the house, or anyone who uses wall smart switches: Govee says its A19 bulb cannot be used with smart switches, and every bulb sits on your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Overall
Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $45–$55 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)Hue’s flagship color bulb is the safe choice for a whole-home setup. The listing says it gives warm-to-cool white and millions of colors straight out of the box, and it works over Bluetooth with no hub. Add a Hue Bridge and you unlock automations, control from anywhere, and a Zigbee connection that won’t drain your Wi-Fi. The Bridge also links Hue to Matter. Preset scenes include a 24-hour natural light routine that follows the sun. Owners report Hue bulbs respond fast and rarely drop offline. The catch is cost: one Hue bulb costs about what you pay for a few Govee bulbs.
Pros- Very reliable, especially with a Bridge
- Works with nearly every smart home platform
- Rich whites as well as colors
Cons- Costs much more per bulb than Govee
- Best features need a Hue Bridge
- Fewer flashy effects than Govee
- 2. Best Budget Color Bulb
Govee Smart A19 Color Bulb
BeastScore 88 / 100Typically $15–$30 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)Govee’s A19 is the cheap, cheerful way into color lighting. The listing promises 16 million colors, 54 preset scenes and 800 lumens, and it connects straight to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so there is no hub to buy. Music sync changes color with sound picked up by your phone’s mic, and timers with sunrise and sunset modes help with wake-up and wind-down routines. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. It is one of the most-reviewed smart bulbs on Amazon. The trade-offs: no 5 GHz Wi-Fi, no smart-switch support, and big Wi-Fi setups can get flaky.
Pros- Very low price per bulb
- No hub needed
- Lots of scenes and music sync
Cons- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
- Govee says it can’t be used with smart switches
- Music sync uses your phone’s mic
- 3. Best Hue on a Budget
Philips Hue Essential A19
BeastScore 87 / 100Typically $20–$30 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)The Hue Essential is Philips’ answer to Govee pricing. The listing says you just screw it in, download the Hue app and control it, with millions of colors and a library of preset scenes from Hue’s lighting designers. It is rated at 800 lumens with whites from 2200K to 6500K, and it dims down to 2%. It works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home, and you can add a Hue Bridge later for security features and syncing with music, movies and games. It costs close to a Govee bulb. It is a newer line, so there are fewer long-term owner reports than for Hue’s main color bulb.
Pros- Hue app and ecosystem for much less
- Works with Apple Home
- Room to grow with a Bridge later
Cons- Newer line with fewer long-term owner reports
- Fewer effects than Govee
- Advanced features still need a Bridge
- 4. Best TV Backlight
Govee Envisual TV Backlight T2
BeastScore 90 / 100Typically $120–$150 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)For TV lighting, Govee’s camera trick is hard to beat on price. The T2 mounts two cameras that watch your screen and match the colors along its edges, so it works with any source: streaming sticks, cable boxes and game consoles. The listing says the strip uses RGBIC lighting at 60 LEDs per meter, so different parts of the strip show different colors. DreamView links other Govee lights in the room into the show. There is no Bridge or sync box to buy. The trade-offs: you have to calibrate the cameras, and owners say bright room light can throw off the color match.
Pros- Syncs with any TV input
- No sync box or bridge to buy
- Vivid multi-zone RGBIC colors
Cons- Cameras need calibration and a clear view
- Strong room light can hurt color accuracy
- Visible camera on top of the TV
- 5. Best for Hue Homes
Philips Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip 55"
BeastScore 85 / 100Typically $130–$160 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)Hue’s Play Gradient strip is the premium way to light up a TV, but only if you are already in the Hue world. The listing shows a flowing multicolor strip with mounting brackets that bend around the corners of a 55-inch TV. To sync it with movies, music and games, you need a Hue Bridge and a Hue Sync Box, both sold separately. Once set up, it ties into the rest of your Hue lights for room-wide effects. The strip alone costs about what Govee charges for its whole camera kit, so the total is far higher.
Pros- Smooth gradient colors
- Ties into the rest of your Hue lights
- No camera sitting on the TV
Cons- Needs a Bridge and a Sync Box for TV sync
- Total cost is far higher than Govee
- Sized for one TV size per strip

Who wins where
The winner of each category, based on published specs and Amazon owner reviews. Pick the rounds that matter to you.
- Round 1
Price
Govee Smart A19 Color Bulb winsGovee wins clearly. Its A19 costs a fraction of Hue’s main color bulb. Hue’s Essential bulb narrows the gap, but full Hue setups still cost much more once you add a Bridge.
- Round 2
Reliability
Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 winsHue on a Bridge uses Zigbee, which stays off your Wi-Fi and responds fast. Govee bulbs each join your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which can get crowded in big setups.
- Round 3
Color & effects
Govee Smart A19 Color Bulb winsGovee packs in more scenes, music sync and DreamView effects. Hue’s colors and whites look polished, but it offers fewer flashy modes.
- Round 4
TV sync
Govee Envisual TV Backlight T2 winsGovee’s T2 uses cameras, so it works with any source and needs no extra box. Hue’s Play Gradient needs a Bridge and a Sync Box, which adds a lot to the cost.
- Round 5
Smart home support
Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 winsHue works with Alexa, Google, Apple Home and Matter through the Bridge. Govee works with Alexa and Google, but Apple Home support depends on the model.

Quick tips before you buy
Smart bulbs need constant power. If someone flips the wall switch off, the bulb goes offline. Use a smart switch made for smart bulbs, or a cover plate.
Govee bulbs only join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router merges bands, set up near the router or turn on a 2.4 GHz network.
If you’ll have more than a handful of Hue lights, budget for a Hue Bridge. It adds automations, remote control and steadier connections.
Both TV kits are sized: the Govee T2 here fits 55–65 inch TVs and the Hue strip fits 55 inch. Buy the size that matches your screen.
