The short answer
For most people the Apple iPad 11-inch (A16) is the right buy. It has a 128GB base size, Touch ID, a USB-C port, Wi-Fi 6 and support for the USB-C Apple Pencil, and it sits around the $400 mark on Amazon. Streaming, browsing, email, homework, reading, note taking and casual games are all well inside what it does. Prices checked October 2026. If you are weighing the iPad against the iPad Air for school or note taking, the real question is whether you need the Air’s faster chip, better screen and Apple Intelligence, or whether the lower price and a good case and Pencil will serve you just as well for years.
Step up to the iPad Air 11-inch (M4) if you want the extra headroom. The Air adds the M4 chip, Apple Intelligence support, Wi-Fi 7 with Apple’s N1 chip, Apple Pencil Pro support and a display with P3 wide colour and an ultralow-reflectivity coating, per the listing. The 13-inch M4 is for people who want a bigger canvas for drawing, split-screen work or a laptop-style setup. The older iPad Air with the M3 chip showed as unavailable on Amazon when we checked, so we left it out.
Skip the Air if you mostly watch video, read and browse, or if you are buying for a child. The base iPad does all of that for hundreds less, and the saving pays for a case, a Pencil or a keyboard. Also skip the 13-inch if you will carry it all day: it is the biggest and most expensive pick here. How we picked: we compared the current Apple listings on Amazon and what owners say about them. We don’t run hands-on lab tests, so everything here comes from the listings and owner reports. Prices move often, so check the current price before you buy.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Value
Apple iPad 11-inch (A16)
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $380–$400 on Amazon (checked October 25, 2026)This is the iPad to buy unless you know you need more. The listing says it has the A16 chip, an 11-inch Liquid Retina display, 128GB to start, Wi-Fi 6 and Touch ID. That covers streaming, school work, video calls, reading, drawing apps and most games. It is also the easiest iPad to shop for: it is one of the most-reviewed tablets on Amazon, and owners mostly praise the battery and the price. The trade-offs are real: the listing doesn’t mention Apple Intelligence, the screen lacks the Air’s wider P3 colour and low-reflectivity coating, and 128GB fills up fast if you download lots of video.
Pros- Hundreds less than any iPad Air, often near $400
- Plenty of power for school, streaming and everyday apps
- USB-C, Touch ID and Apple Pencil (USB-C) support
Cons- No Apple Intelligence listed, unlike the Air
- Display is less advanced than the Air screen
- 128GB base storage fills up quickly with downloads
- 2. Best Overall Air
Apple iPad Air 11-inch (M4)
BeastScore 91 / 100Typically $660–$700 on Amazon (checked October 25, 2026)This is the newest 11-inch Air, and the best pick if you want one tablet to last. The listing says the M4 chip handles multitasking and complex AI tasks, and the tablet adds Wi-Fi 7 with Apple’s N1 chip, Touch ID, Apple Intelligence and the P3 display with True Tone and ultralow reflectivity. It works with both Apple Pencil Pro and the USB-C Pencil, weighs about 1.02 pounds, and storage goes up to 1TB, which matters for video editors and people who download media. The main reason to hold back is price: it costs roughly $260 to $300 more than the base iPad. If your apps are school, streaming and browsing, the extra buys future-proofing rather than a visible difference today.
Pros- Newest chip, most years of software support ahead
- Wi-Fi 7 for faster home networks and file transfers
- Storage options up to 1TB
Cons- Priced well above the base iPad
- 128GB base size is small for the money
- Most people will not use the extra power day to day
- 3. Best Big Screen
Apple iPad Air 13-inch (M4)
BeastScore 88 / 100Typically $900–$930 on Amazon (checked October 25, 2026)The 13-inch Air is the same M4 tablet with a bigger screen. That space helps if you draw, annotate documents, run two apps side by side or use the tablet with a keyboard as a laptop stand-in. The listing confirms the M4 chip, Wi-Fi 7 with N1 and 128GB to start, with the same Apple Intelligence support as the 11-inch. You pay for it: it costs roughly $200 more than the 11-inch M4 and more than double the base iPad. It is also bigger and heavier to hold, so it is better on a desk than on a commute. Buy it only if the screen size is the point.
Pros- Largest screen in the Air line, ideal for drawing and multitasking
- M4 chip and Wi-Fi 7
- Same Air display features as the 11-inch
Cons- Most expensive pick here, close to $950
- Larger and less comfortable to hold for long periods
- 128GB base size feels small at this price

Yes if you edit photos or video, draw, multitask a lot or want Apple Intelligence. No if you mostly stream, browse, read and do homework. The base iPad handles those jobs for hundreds less.
What is the difference between the iPad and iPad Air?+
The iPad Air uses the M4 chip, lists Apple Intelligence and Wi-Fi 7 with Apple’s N1 chip, and its display adds P3 wide colour and an ultralow-reflectivity coating. It comes in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. The base iPad uses the A16 chip with Wi-Fi 6, is 11-inch only, and does not list Apple Intelligence.
iPad vs iPad Air for students: which one?+
The base iPad is enough for most students: it handles notes, reading, video calls and homework, and it costs about $380 to $400. Step up to the 11-inch M4 Air if they edit video, draw or want Apple Intelligence.
Which is better for note taking, the iPad or the iPad Air?+
Both work well. The base iPad listing supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), and the Air lists both Apple Pencil Pro and the USB-C Pencil. The Air also has a low-reflectivity screen coating. Pick the Air for heavy note taking or drawing, or the 13-inch if you want a bigger page.

Buy the base iPad for the lowest price and everyday use. Buy the 11-inch Air for the fastest chip and the best long-term pick, or the 13-inch Air only if you want the biggest screen. The iPad mini is the better pick if you want the smallest, lightest iPad for reading and travel, but it costs more than the base iPad for a smaller screen.
Is 128GB enough on an iPad?+
