The short answer
For toddlers and preschoolers, the Toniebox 2 is the one to buy. A child places a soft character figure (a Tonie) on top and the story starts; they squeeze the ears to change the volume and tap the sides to skip. There are no cards to slot in and nothing to break, and the figures double as toys. The new Toniebox 2 adds a sleep timer with light, a sunrise alarm and Tonieplay games, and the My First Farm Bundle comes with three squeezable starter figures for ages 1 and up.
For kids around 5 and older, the Yoto Player (3rd Gen) is the better long-term buy. It plays audiobook cards, but also free podcasts, radio and sleep sounds, has a pixel display, a nightlight, an OK-to-wake clock and a thermometer, and runs up to 16 hours on a charge. The pocket-size Yoto Mini takes the same cards on car trips and adds a Bluetooth speaker mode. Families with a Pokémon fan can get the Toniebox 2 in a Pokémon Starter Set instead.
Skip the Toniebox if your child is already reading chapter books or you want to fill it with long audiobooks cheaply. Each Tonie figure holds a limited amount of content and costs more per story than a Yoto card, and the collection gets expensive fast. Skip the Yoto if your child is under 3: cards are easier to lose and bend than a chunky figure, and the extra clock and display features matter less to a toddler.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Overall
Toniebox 2 My First Farm Bundle
BeastScore 91 / 100Typically $160–$180 on Amazon (checked October 10, 2026)The Toniebox 2 is the easiest audio player a small child can use on their own. Put a figure on top and it plays; take it off and it stops. The listing says the ears adjust the volume and tapping the sides changes tracks, so there are no small buttons. The new model adds a sleep timer with light and a sunrise alarm to help with bedtime routines, plus Tonieplay interactive games and quizzes with a controller sold separately. This My First Farm Bundle includes three soft, squeezable Tonies made for ages 1+. It has the biggest owner base of any player here. Figures are the catch: each one costs extra.
Pros- Simplest controls for toddlers, no cards to lose
- Figures double as toys kids love to collect
- New sleep timer, sunrise alarm and Tonieplay games
Cons- Each Tonie figure adds cost, and collections add up
- No display or clock like the Yoto Player
- Tonieplay controller sold separately
- 2. Best for Ages 5+
Yoto Player (3rd Gen)
BeastScore 90 / 100The Yoto Player is a bedside audio player that grows with your child. Kids pop in an audiobook card to play it and pull it out to stop, and two large dials handle volume and tracks. The listing says it works as a nightlight, an OK-to-wake alarm clock, a room thermometer and a sleep-sound machine, with a pixel display that shows simple pictures for each track. Beyond paid cards, it plays free podcasts, radio and soundscapes, and Make Your Own cards hold your own recordings. Yoto says it lasts up to 16 hours per charge. This bundle adds a protective Adventure Jacket. Cards are easier to lose than a Tonie.
Pros- Nightlight, OK-to-wake clock and sleep sounds in one
- Free podcasts and radio on top of cards
- Cards usually cost less per story than Tonies
Cons- Flat cards are easy for toddlers to lose or bend
- Few owner reviews on this Amazon bundle so far
- Larger than the Mini for travel
- 3. Best for Travel
Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) + Disney Pixar
BeastScore 86 / 100The Yoto Mini is a pocket-size Yoto that plays every Yoto card. The listing says it runs up to 14 hours on a charge, works as a portable Bluetooth speaker or with headphones, and keeps the pixel display and OK-to-wake clock. Like all Yoto players it has no camera, no microphone and no ads. This bundle includes six Disney Pixar story cards (Toy Story, Up, Finding Nemo and more) and a Make Your Own card, so it is ready to go out of the box. It skips the bigger Player’s nightlight, so it is better as a travel player than a bedside one. Reviews on this bundle are still few.
Pros- Small enough for a backpack or car seat
- Plays every Yoto card, podcast and radio station
- Bundle includes six Pixar story cards
Cons- No nightlight like the full Yoto Player
- Smaller speaker than the full Yoto Player
- Pixar stories are aimed at ages 6+
- 4. Best for Pokémon Fans
Toniebox 2 Pokémon Starter Set
BeastScore 84 / 100Typically $140–$160 on Amazon (checked October 10, 2026)This is the same Toniebox 2 in a Lightning Yellow finish, packaged as a Pokémon starter set for kids 5 and up. You get the same squeeze-the-ears volume, tap-to-skip controls, sleep timer with light, sunrise alarm and Tonieplay games as the Farm bundle, and it plays every other Tonie in the range. It makes sense for a slightly older child who is already a Pokémon fan and will be excited to unbox it. It is the cheaper way into a Toniebox 2 here. The same cost issue applies: each extra figure adds up, and the Yoto Player still offers more for kids who want long audiobooks.
Pros- Same Toniebox 2 features for less
- Fun Pokémon theme for ages 5+
- Plays every Tonie figure
Cons- Fewer owner reviews than the Farm bundle so far
- Check the listing for exactly which figures are included
- Long audiobooks cost more than on Yoto

Who wins where
The winner of each category, based on published specs and Amazon owner reviews. Pick the rounds that matter to you.
- Round 1
Easy for toddlers
Toniebox 2 My First Farm Bundle winsThe Toniebox 2 wins clearly. A child just sets a soft figure on top and squeezes the ears for volume. Yoto cards have to be slotted in the right way, and flat cards are easier for a 2-year-old to lose or bend.
- Round 2
Content library and cost
Yoto Player (3rd Gen) winsYoto has more long-form content, from chapter-book series to music, plus free podcasts and radio. A pack of six Yoto cards often costs about as much as two or three Tonie figures, so cost per story is usually lower on Yoto, especially for older kids.
- Round 3
Bedtime features
Yoto Player (3rd Gen) winsBoth now help with sleep. Toniebox 2 adds a sleep timer with light and a sunrise alarm. The Yoto Player goes further with a nightlight, an OK-to-wake clock, a pixel display and built-in sleep sounds.
- Round 4
Portability
Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) + Disney Pixar winsThe Yoto Mini fits in a pocket, runs up to 14 hours and plays every Yoto card. The Toniebox 2 is portable around the house but bulkier for a car trip, and figures are easy to drop between seats.
- Round 5
Games and play
Toniebox 2 My First Farm Bundle winsThe figures are toys in their own right, and Tonieplay adds interactive games, quizzes and challenges on Toniebox 2 with a controller sold separately. Yoto focuses on listening rather than games.
