OnePlus 16 vs iPhone 18 Pro: Can a 9,000mAh Beast Beat Apple's Best?

The OnePlus 16 launches in China on October 12 with a 9,000mAh battery, a 185Hz gaming screen and a 200MP main camera. The iPhone 18 Pro has been on US shelves since September 18 at $1,199. We compare what is official, what is still a leak, and whether an American buyer should even try to import the OnePlus.

OnePlus 16 vs iPhone 18 Pro: Can a 9,000mAh Beast Beat Apple's Best?
Key Takeaway

On paper, the OnePlus 16 wins on battery, charging, refresh rate and probably price. The iPhone 18 Pro wins on everything that matters once you live in the US: you can buy it at any carrier, it is fully supported here, its 48MP 4x telephoto and video tools are proven, and it gets years of iOS updates. OnePlus has said it will no longer launch new phones in North America, so for most US buyers this is not a real choice. Import the OnePlus only if you know your carrier bands and can live without a US warranty.

The OnePlus 16 is one week away. OnePlus will launch it in China on Monday, October 12, and it is shaping up to be the biggest-battery flagship of the year: OnePlus China president Li Jie Louis confirmed a 9,000mAh cell on Weibo, and the company has already confirmed a 185Hz gaming display and Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.

The iPhone 18 Pro is the obvious benchmark. Apple announced it on September 9, and it went on sale in the US on September 18 starting at $1,199.

There is one big catch for US readers. In July, OnePlus said it "will no longer launch new products in Europe and North America" (via TechCrunch). So this comparison is partly about specs and partly about whether importing a OnePlus 16 is worth the trouble.

Round 1: Battery and charging. Winner: OnePlus 16

This one is not close. 9,000mAh is more than double the 4,056mAh Apple lists on the iPhone 18 Pro's EU energy label (Beebom). It is also 1,700mAh more than the OnePlus 15's 7,300mAh, as GSMArena points out.

Apple is efficient, and it rates the 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback. But capacity this big usually means a two-day phone for normal use. OnePlus has confirmed 50W wireless charging, and Android Headlines reports 100W wired. Apple promises 50% in about 15 minutes with a cable and up to 25W on MagSafe.

We will wait for real battery tests before calling the margin, but the OnePlus starts with a huge head start.

Round 2: Display. Winner: OnePlus 16 for gamers, iPhone for everyone else

The OnePlus 16 has a 6.78-inch 1.5K panel that runs at 165Hz across the system and up to 185Hz in supported games. OnePlus says titles like Arena Breakout, Naruto Mobile and Peace Elite will run at a native 185fps, helped by separate chips for display, touch and networking.

The iPhone 18 Pro tops out at 120Hz on a smaller 6.3-inch screen, but Apple quotes 3,000 nits outdoors. OnePlus has not published a brightness number yet. If you play competitive mobile games, the OnePlus is the more exciting screen. If you want a smaller phone that is easy to read in sunlight, the iPhone is the safer bet.

Round 3: Performance. Winner: too close to call

Both phones use 2nm chips, the first from both Apple and Qualcomm.

  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: Qualcomm announced it on September 22. Tech-ish reports Qualcomm's claims of 44% faster graphics and 13% faster CPU performance over the previous generation.
  • A20 Pro: Apple says the 7-core GPU is up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro, memory bandwidth is up 50%, and a new vapor chamber gives up to 40% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

Benchmarks for the OnePlus 16 aren't out yet. Until both phones are tested side by side, call this a tie.

Round 4: Cameras. Winner: iPhone 18 Pro (for now)

On paper, the OnePlus has the bigger numbers. OnePlus has confirmed a 200MP main camera, and tipster Digital Chat Station says it uses a large 1/1.4-inch sensor, with a 50MP 3x periscope on a 1/1.95-inch Sony sensor and a 50MP ultrawide (via GSMArena). That is a big upgrade over the OnePlus 15's 50MP main camera.

The iPhone 18 Pro answers with:

  • A 48MP main camera with a real variable aperture (f/1.48 to f/4) driven by six laser-cut blades. That gives you true depth-of-field control without software blur.
  • A 48MP 4x telephoto (100mm) and an 8x optical-quality crop. That is more reach than the OnePlus's 3x lens.
  • New Pro controls for shutter speed, aperture and white balance, plus a histogram.
  • Strong video tools, including 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse and Cinematic effects you can apply after you shoot.

We give this round to Apple because its camera is proven and its video lead is well known. The OnePlus could close the gap once we see real samples, but right now its strongest specs come from leaks.

Round 5: Software and support. Winner: iPhone 18 Pro

The iPhone ships with iOS 27 and gets Siri AI in beta. It also comes with a US warranty, Apple Store support and years of updates.

The China OnePlus 16 runs ColorOS 17, the China version of OnePlus's software. It usually ships without Google Play services preinstalled, and it isn't built for US carriers. A global version with OxygenOS may come through India (some reports point to November, which OnePlus hasn't confirmed), but it still won't be sold or supported in the US.

Round 6: Price. Winner: OnePlus 16, with an asterisk

OnePlus hasn't announced a price. Digital Chat Station predicted around CNY 5,000, and a later leak reported by Notebookcheck lists CNY 4,999 for 8GB/256GB, up to CNY 7,499 for 16GB/1TB. CNY 4,999 is about $700 before import markup and shipping. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199.

The asterisk: import sellers add their own markup, shipping and any import charges, and you get no US warranty. Once you add those, the price gap shrinks, though it may not disappear.

Can you buy the OnePlus 16 in the US?

Not officially. OnePlus told TechCrunch on July 16, 2026 that it "will no longer launch new products in Europe and North America," while promising after-sales support and software updates for phones it has already sold there. If you import one anyway, check these first:

  • Network bands. China models usually lack some US LTE and 5G bands, and you shouldn't expect mmWave support. Compare the phone's band list with your carrier's before you buy.
  • Calling features. VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling may not work on AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile with an imported phone.
  • Google apps. The China software may not include the Play Store. Installing it yourself is possible, but it is extra work and can break.
  • Warranty and repairs. OnePlus won't service new imports in the US. If the screen cracks, you are on your own.
  • Wait for a global version. If you want this phone, a global model, if one comes, is a safer import than a China unit.

Bottom line
