Microsoft has finally put a price on its most powerful laptop.
At its event in San Francisco on October 7, Microsoft said the Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599. Pre-orders opened the same day at Microsoft.com and Best Buy. The laptop ships on October 16.
It is the first Surface built on NVIDIA's RTX Spark chip, which pairs an NVIDIA Grace CPU with a Blackwell RTX GPU. Microsoft first showed the laptop back in May but held back the price and date until now.
In our pre-event preview we said leaks pointed anywhere from under $2,000 to about $3,000. The real starting price landed in the middle. Here is what you get for the money, and how it compares with Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Key dates
| Date | What happens |

Surface Laptop Ultra prices and configurations
Memory and chip are the only things that change between models. Every version gets the same 15-inch screen, ports and design.
| Model | CPU | GPU cores | Memory | Storage | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | 18-core | 5,120 | 24GB | 512GB | $2,599 |
| Step-up | 20-core | 6,144 | 32GB | 1TB | $3,699.99 |
| Top | 20-core | 6,144 | 128GB | 1TB | $5,899.99 |
Microsoft's own blog and most launch coverage list the base price as $2,599. Microsoft's product page shows $2,599.99. Check the price at checkout.
Storage goes up to 2TB, and launch reports say the SSD can be replaced by the owner. Colors are Platinum and Nightfall.
Surface Laptop Ultra vs MacBook Pro 16
| Surface Laptop Ultra | MacBook Pro 16 (M5 Pro / M5 Max) | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $2,599 | $2,999 (M5 Pro, 24GB, 1TB) |
| Screen | 15" mini-LED touchscreen, 262 ppi, 120Hz | 16.2" Liquid Retina XDR, 254 ppi, up to 120Hz, no touch |
| Peak HDR brightness | 2,000 nits | 1,600 nits |
| Chip | NVIDIA RTX Spark: up to 20-core Grace CPU, up to 6,144 GPU cores | Apple M5 Pro or M5 Max: 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU |
| Max memory | 128GB unified | 128GB unified (M5 Max) |
| Max storage | 2TB | 8TB |
| Weight | Under 4.5 lb (CNBC reports 4.4 lb) | 4.7 lb |
| Thickness | Under 18mm | 16.8mm |
| Battery claim | Not given in hours | Up to 24 hours video (M5 Pro), 22 hours (M5 Max) |
| Ports | 3x USB-C (one magnetic), USB-A, HDMI, SD card, headphone jack | 3x Thunderbolt 5, MagSafe 3, HDMI, SDXC, headphone jack |
At the high end, the gap narrows. The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max (40-core GPU, 48GB, 2TB) costs $4,999. The Surface with 128GB of memory costs $5,899.99, but with half the storage.
What is new
A magnetic USB-C port. This is the headline feature. One of the three USB-C ports is a breakaway port, like Apple's MagSafe. If someone trips over the cable, it pops off instead of pulling the laptop off the desk. Unlike MagSafe, it is a standard USB-C port, so it also works with normal USB-C accessories. Microsoft and Windows Central call it a world first for a laptop.
Local AI power. Microsoft says the top model can run AI models with up to 120 billion parameters on the laptop itself and deliver up to 1 petaflop of AI performance. At the event, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said the GPU has as much processing power as NVIDIA's 2016 DGX-1 data center server.
Microsoft's speed claims. Against a MacBook Pro 16 with M5 Pro, Microsoft says the Surface is 2.1 times faster to the first AI token, 4.3 times faster at AI image generation and 6.2 times faster at AI video generation. These are Microsoft's own numbers. No independent tests exist yet.
A bigger cooling system and touchpad. Microsoft says the cooling has up to 2.5 times the heat capacity of the 15-inch Surface Laptop (8th Edition), and the haptic touchpad is 30% larger.
What is missing: Microsoft has not given a battery life number in hours. The screen also does not support a pen.
Where each one wins
Surface Laptop Ultra wins on:
- Starting price. $2,599 is $400 less than the cheapest 16-inch MacBook Pro.
- Screen. 2,000 nits beats 1,600 nits, and you get touch.
- Ports. USB-A, a full-size SD slot and HDMI mean fewer dongles. It can drive up to three 4K displays.
- CUDA. Many AI and 3D tools are built for NVIDIA first. That is a real advantage for AI developers.
MacBook Pro 16 wins on:
- Battery life you can count on. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of video. Microsoft has given no number.
- Storage at the base price. The $2,999 MacBook comes with 1TB. The $2,599 Surface has 512GB.
- A proven platform. RTX Spark is a new Arm chip for Windows. Some older Windows apps will run through emulation, and no one has reviewed it yet.
- Thunderbolt 5. Three fast ports for external drives and displays.
Which should you buy?
- AI developers and CUDA users: the Surface Laptop Ultra is the one to get, ideally the 20-core model. Running large models locally on CUDA in a 15-inch laptop is new.
- Video editors and Mac users: stay with the MacBook Pro 16. It is proven, the battery is long, and your apps already run natively.
- Windows creators who want the best screen: the base Surface at $2,599 is a strong pick on paper, but 512GB fills up fast. Budget for the 1TB tier or an external drive.
- Gamers: this is not a gaming laptop first. The GPU will run many games, but a dedicated gaming laptop gives you more for less.
- Wait: for most people, waiting is still smart. The laptop ships on October 16. Give it a week or two for independent reviews of battery life, heat and app compatibility. Other RTX Spark laptops from Dell, ASUS and others are also due this fall.
