Roku vs Fire TV vs Google TV
Which platform should you pick?
Our overall winner is the Roku Streaming Stick Plus. The device matters less than the software it runs. We compared Roku, Fire TV and Google TV on the home screen, search, voice, free TV and smart home, then picked the best stick or box for each.
How we picked: we shortlist by Amazon Best Seller rank and number of ratings, then compare published specs. We don't test these products hands-on.

The short answer
For most people, Roku is the platform to pick, and the Roku Streaming Stick Plus is the easy way in. Roku’s home screen is a plain grid of your apps, its search shows results from every service side by side, and its free Roku Channel and Live TV guide give you hundreds of channels without a subscription. It is the one we’d set up for a parent or a guest room and never think about again.
Pick Fire TV if your home already runs on Alexa and Prime. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select puts Alexa+ in the remote, and the new 2026 Fire TV home screen groups shows by category so you scroll less. Pick Google TV if you pay for several services and want one screen that suggests what to watch across all of them. The Google TV Streamer is the best Google TV box, with 32 GB of storage, Dolby Vision and a smart home panel built in.
Don’t choose Roku if you want a home screen that learns your taste. Roku shows your apps, not a feed of recommendations, and its voice search is basic next to Alexa+ or Gemini. Don’t choose Fire TV if you hate ads and Prime Video promos on the home screen. And don’t pay for the Google TV Streamer if you only watch one or two apps: a cheap Roku stick does that job for a fraction of the price.
How we picked: this page is about the platforms, so we chose the best-selling current device for each one on Amazon and compared the listings, the software and what owners say after months of use. We don’t claim hands-on lab tests. Checked October 2026.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best Overall Platform
Roku Streaming Stick Plus
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $30–$40 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)Roku wins because it gets out of the way. The home screen is a grid of your apps in the order you choose, and search shows where a show is streaming across every service, with the cheapest option first. The Streaming Stick Plus brings that to any 4K TV with HDR10+, and the listing says it can draw power from the TV’s USB port, so there is no extra cord behind the set. The remote turns the TV on and sets the volume. Owners like how fast setup is. The trade-off: no Dolby Vision on this model, and the home screen still shows ads.
Pros- Simplest home screen of the three, easy for any age
- Neutral search that ranks results across all services
- Can run on TV USB power, so no extra plug
Cons- No Dolby Vision on this model (HDR10+ only)
- Few personal recommendations compared with Google TV
- Sponsored tiles and ads on the home screen
- 2. Best for Alexa & Prime Homes
Fire TV Stick 4K Select
BeastScore 87 / 100Typically $30–$50 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)Fire TV is the best platform if Amazon already runs your home. The 4K Select is the newest entry 4K stick, and the listing says it ships with the 2026 Fire TV home screen: dedicated content categories, more pinned apps and picks from Alexa+. You can talk to the remote naturally, ask for “that new spy show” and have it open the right app, then dim the lights or check a camera on the same screen. It streams 4K with HDR10+. The trade-offs: Prime Video and sponsored rows take up a lot of the home screen, and owners rate this stick a notch below Roku for speed.
Pros- Alexa+ is the most natural voice search here
- Works with Alexa smart home gear and cameras
- Lots of free and live TV built in
Cons- Home screen leans hard on Prime Video and ads
- Owners rate it a bit lower than the Roku sticks
- HDR10+ only; no Dolby Vision listed on this model
- 3. Best Recommendations
Google TV Streamer 4K
BeastScore 90 / 100Typically $100–$150 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)Google TV has the smartest home screen. Instead of a wall of apps, it builds rows of shows from all the services you pay for, tuned to each person in the house. The Google TV Streamer is the best box to run it: the listing says it streams 4K with Dolby Vision, passes Dolby Atmos to a soundbar, and has 32 GB of storage, far more than a stick. Shows you save in Google search land in your TV watchlist. It doubles as a smart home panel. The catches: it costs three to four times a Roku stick, and you need to buy an HDMI 2.1 cable separately.
Pros- Best personal recommendations across all your apps
- Dolby Vision and Atmos for the best picture and sound here
- 32 GB storage for lots of apps and games
Cons- Costs far more than the sticks
- HDMI cable is sold separately, per the listing
- Overkill if you only use one or two apps
- 4. Best Roku for Dolby Vision
Roku Streaming Stick 4K
BeastScore 89 / 100Typically $30–$50 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)If you like Roku but your TV supports Dolby Vision, this is the stick to get instead of the Plus. It keeps the same plain home screen, neutral search and free Roku Channel, and adds Dolby Vision alongside HDR10+, so Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV shows get the HDR format they were mastered in. It is one of the most-reviewed streaming sticks on Amazon, and owners mostly praise its reliability and easy setup. It usually costs only a few dollars more than the Plus. The limits are Roku’s: basic recommendations, ads on the home screen, and voice search that finds shows but can’t do much else.
Pros- Dolby Vision plus HDR10+ on a cheap stick
- Huge owner base, known for reliability
- Same easy Roku interface
Cons- Same ads and light recommendations as other Rokus
- Voice remote is basic next to Alexa+ or Gemini
- 5. Best Budget Pick
Roku Streaming Stick HD
BeastScore 84 / 100Typically $20–$30 on Amazon (checked October 12, 2026)For an older HD TV in a bedroom, kitchen or dorm, this is the cheapest way to get a full streaming platform. It runs the same Roku software as the 4K sticks, so you get every major app, the free Roku Channel and the Live TV guide. The listing says the slim body won’t block neighboring HDMI ports and can run off the TV’s USB power, so it hides behind the set. The voice remote controls TV power and volume. The obvious limit is picture: it tops out at HD, so don’t buy it for a 4K TV. Upgrading the TV soon? Get the Plus.
Pros- Lowest price for a full Roku experience
- Slim design that hides behind the TV
- Same apps and free TV as pricier Rokus
Cons- HD only, wasted on a 4K TV
- No HDR support

Who wins where
The winner of each category, based on published specs and Amazon owner reviews. Pick the rounds that matter to you.
- Round 1
Ease of use
Roku Streaming Stick Plus winsRoku is the easiest. Your apps sit in a grid you arrange yourself, and nothing moves around. Fire TV and Google TV both push rows of suggestions and promos, which helps some people and confuses others.
- Round 2
Recommendations
Google TV Streamer 4K winsGoogle TV builds its home screen from the shows on every service you use and tunes it per person. Fire TV’s 2026 home screen adds categories and Alexa+ picks, but leans on Prime Video. Roku mostly leaves the choosing to you.
- Round 3
Voice and search
Fire TV Stick 4K Select winsAlexa+ on Fire TV handles natural requests best and also runs your smart home. Google TV is close with Google Assistant and Gemini. Roku’s voice search finds titles and apps, and its text search is the most neutral about where to watch.
- Round 4
Picture and sound
Google TV Streamer 4K winsThe Google TV Streamer supports Dolby Vision and passes Dolby Atmos to a soundbar. The Roku Streaming Stick 4K also has Dolby Vision. The Roku Stick Plus and Fire TV Stick 4K Select list HDR10+ only.
- Round 5
Free TV
TieAll three give you a lot for free. Roku has The Roku Channel and a Live TV guide, Fire TV has free and live TV built into the home screen, and Google TV lists 800+ free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi and more.
- Round 6
Value
Roku Streaming Stick Plus winsRoku sticks cost the least for a full 4K platform. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is close, especially on sale. The Google TV Streamer costs three to four times as much, and you still need an HDMI cable.

Quick tips before you buy
Alexa homes suit Fire TV, Android and Google Home suit Google TV, and Roku works the same with everything.
If your TV supports Dolby Vision, pick a device that lists it: the Google TV Streamer or Roku Streaming Stick 4K.
Sticks plug straight into HDMI. The Google TV Streamer is a box and needs an HDMI cable you buy separately.
Put the router close or use a box with Ethernet if 4K streams buffer. A slow network hurts any platform.
Quick answers
Is Roku better than Fire TV?+
For most people, yes. Roku is simpler, its search is neutral across services, and it pushes fewer promos. Fire TV is better if you use Alexa and Prime, because Alexa+ voice control and smart home features are built in.
Is Google TV better than Roku?+
Google TV is better at recommending what to watch across your services, and the Google TV Streamer has better picture and sound options. Roku is easier to use and cheaper. Pick Google TV if you pay for several services; pick Roku for simplicity.
Which streaming platform has the fewest ads?+
None are ad-free. All three show sponsored tiles or rows on the home screen. Roku’s ads are the easiest to ignore because your app grid stays in place, while Fire TV promotes Prime Video and sponsored content most heavily.
Do I need a streaming stick if I have a smart TV?+
Not always. Many TVs already run Roku, Fire TV or Google TV. A stick makes sense if your TV’s built-in software is slow, no longer gets app updates, or runs a platform you don’t like.
Which is best for free live TV?+
All three are strong. Roku has The Roku Channel and a Live TV guide, Fire TV has free and live TV on its home screen, and Google TV lists 800+ free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi and others.
Can I use Apple TV+, Netflix and YouTube on all three?+
Yes. All the big apps, including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock and Paramount+, are on Roku, Fire TV and Google TV.
Which is best for older parents?+
Roku. The plain app grid doesn’t change, the remote has big simple buttons, and setup takes minutes. The Roku Streaming Stick Plus or Streaming Stick HD are good choices.
