The short answer
For most homes, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is the Dyson to buy. It is the lightest of Dyson’s smart cordless models, runs up to 60 minutes, and comes with the Fluffy Optic head, whose green laser shows dust you can’t normally see on hard floors. It also has a Motorbar head for rugs and carpet, an LCD screen and a wall dock. It hits the sweet spot between the basic V8 and the pricey V15.
Pick the V15 Detect if you have a big home, thick carpet or pets: it has more power, a particle counter on the screen, and auto-adjusts suction by floor type. Pick the V11 if you want long run time and strong suction for carpet but don’t care about the laser. Pick the V8 if you want a genuine Dyson on a budget for a smaller home. And if you want maximum carpet cleaning with no battery to wear out, the corded Ball Animal 3 upright has the most suction of the lot.
Dyson also sells the Gen5detect, its most powerful stick, but we couldn’t find it sold by Dyson on Amazon US when we checked, so it isn’t in this lineup. One more note: Dyson runs frequent sales, and the gaps between these models often shrink. Decide which features you need here, then check the current price before you buy.

Why each one made the list
What each pick does best, where it falls short, and the typical Amazon price when we checked.
- 1. Best for Most Homes
Dyson V12 Detect Slim
BeastScore 92 / 100Typically $430–$650 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)The V12 is Dyson’s lightest smart cordless vacuum, and that is what makes it easy to use every day. It ships with two heads: the Fluffy Optic with a laser that lights up fine dust on hard floors, and a de-tangling Motorbar for rugs that clears wrapped hair as you go. Dyson’s V12 listings promise up to 60 minutes of run time, an LCD screen for modes and battery, and a docking station to store and charge it. Owners love how light it feels on stairs and overhead. The trade-offs: the bin is small, and it has less power than the V15 for deep carpet.
Pros- Lightest smart Dyson, easy on stairs and shelves
- Laser head reveals hidden dust on hard floors
- Up to 60 minutes of run time
Cons- Small bin needs emptying often in bigger homes
- Less power than the V15 for deep-pile carpet
- Price swings a lot between sales
- 2. Most Powerful Cordless
Dyson V15 Detect
BeastScore 91 / 100Typically $640–$750 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)The V15 Detect is the most capable cordless Dyson on Amazon here. The listing claims twice the power of earlier models and up to 60 minutes of run time, and it adjusts suction automatically based on the floor and the debris it detects. The LCD screen counts the particles you pick up as you clean, which owners find oddly satisfying and useful for spotting dirty rooms. It comes with the laser Fluffy Optic head and a Digital Motorbar for carpets and pet hair, and a power trigger saves battery. It is the priciest stick here and heavier than the V12, so it tires the arm faster on stairs.
Pros- Strongest cordless suction in the lineup
- Auto power and live particle count
- Laser head plus a pet-hair-ready Motorbar
Cons- Most expensive cordless model here
- Heavier than the V12 for overhead cleaning
- Trigger must be held down while cleaning
- 3. Best Run Time for the Money
Dyson V11 Origin
BeastScore 88 / 100Typically $450–$600 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)The V11 is the pick if you want strong suction and long run time but don’t care about lasers or particle counts. The listing rates it at 185 AW, which Dyson says is 60% more power than older models, with up to 60 minutes of run time. Three modes include Auto, which balances power and battery for everyday cleaning, and an LCD screen shows mode, maintenance alerts and run time to the second. The Motorbar head de-tangles hair on all floor types, and a docking station is in the box. Owners like it for carpeted homes. It is heavier than the V12 and lacks the laser head.
Pros- 185 AW suction for carpets and rugs
- Up to 60 minutes with an Auto mode
- LCD screen counts down run time to the second
Cons- No laser dust-detection head
- Heavier than the V12 Detect Slim
- Often priced close to the smarter V12
- 4. Best Budget Dyson
Dyson V8
BeastScore 85 / 100Typically $400–$460 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)The V8 is the entry point to Dyson’s cordless range, and it is still one of the most-reviewed stick vacuums on Amazon. The listing rates it at 115 AW with two power modes and up to 40 minutes of run time (about 5 minutes on Max). It uses the same de-tangling Motorbar head as pricier models, so long hair and pet hair don’t wrap around the brush, and it converts to a handheld for cars, stairs and sofas. A wall dock, crevice tool and hair screw tool are included. There is no screen or laser, and owners say the run time is short for larger homes.
Pros- Lowest-priced cordless Dyson in the lineup
- Same de-tangling Motorbar head as the pricier sticks
- Light and easy to use as a handheld
Cons- Up to 40 minutes, and only about 5 on Max
- No screen, laser or auto mode
- Least suction of the cordless models
- 5. Best for Carpet & Pets
Dyson Ball Animal 3
BeastScore 87 / 100Typically $380–$450 on Amazon (checked October 9, 2026)If your home is mostly carpet and you have pets, the corded Ball Animal 3 out-cleans every stick here. The listing rates it at 290 AW, far more than any cordless model, and you never run out of battery. Radial Root Cyclone technology boosts suction, and the de-tangling Motorbar head clears wrapped hair automatically. Three suction modes cover deep carpet, low pile and hard floors, and the ball lets you steer around furniture with a twist of the wrist. A stair tool and combination tool are included. The catch is size: it is heavy, takes closet space and can’t switch to handheld mode.
Pros- Most suction in the lineup, with no battery to fade
- De-tangling head for pet hair on carpet
- Costs less than the V12 and V15 sticks
Cons- Heavy and awkward to carry up stairs
- Cord limits reach; no handheld mode
- Takes up real closet space

Quick tips before you buy
Run time claims use the lowest power. On Max, every cordless Dyson drains in minutes, so save it for stubborn spots.
All five use a Motorbar head that clears wrapped hair. For heavy shedding on carpet, go V15 or Ball Animal 3.
Rinse the filter in cold water and let it dry for 24 hours. A clogged filter cuts suction fast.
Buy from Dyson’s store or “Ships from Amazon”. Some listings are older stock or bundles with different heads.
Quick answers
Which Dyson vacuum is best?+
The V12 Detect Slim is best for most homes: light, up to 60 minutes and a laser dust head. The V15 Detect is best for big homes, carpet and pets, and the V8 is the budget pick.
Dyson V8 vs V15: what’s the difference?+
The V15 has much more power, up to 60 minutes of run time instead of 40, a laser dust head, an LCD screen with a particle count and automatic power. The V8 is lighter and costs less but has no smart features.
Dyson V12 vs V15: which should I buy?+
Pick the V12 if you mostly have hard floors and want a lighter vacuum. Pick the V15 for carpets, pets and bigger homes, where its extra power and auto-sensing make a real difference.
Is the Dyson V8 still worth buying?+
Yes for small homes and quick cleanups. It has the same de-tangling Motorbar head as pricier models. If you clean a big home in one go, its 40-minute run time will feel short.
How long does a Dyson battery last?+
Owners usually report several years before run time drops noticeably. Replacement batteries are sold separately, and run time on any model drops if you leave it on Max.
Is a corded Dyson better than cordless?+
For carpet, yes: the Ball Animal 3 has more suction and never runs out of battery. Cordless sticks are lighter, easier to grab for quick jobs and turn into handhelds.
