The short answer: the usual cause is the update itself. After a big iOS release the phone keeps working in the background for a few days, and that uses battery and adds heat. Give it 3 to 7 days on Wi-Fi with an overnight charge, then open Settings > Battery and look at the app at the top. If the drain is still bad after a week, or Battery Health shows a Service message, contact Apple. A power bank only helps after that.
iOS 27 reached the public on September 14, 2026. The latest release, iOS 27.2, came out on October 26, 2026. The iPhone 17 went on sale on September 19, 2025. An Apple Community thread called "IOS 27 battery drain issue" has 1,415 "me too" votes on its first post. No Apple employee posted there and nobody confirmed a fix, so treat it as user reports, not proof of a bug.
We did not test any of these products. Everything below comes from Apple, the makers and the sources at the end.
Key facts
| Fact | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Video playback, Apple "up to" | iPhone 17: 30 hours. 17 Pro: 33. 17 Pro Max: 39. iPhone Air: 27 |
| Wireless charging, iPhone 17 | MagSafe and Qi2, each up to 25W (Apple) |
| Wired fast charge | About 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W or higher adapter (Apple) |
| How long the drain lasts | "A few days" (Apple). 3 to 5 days, a week with a big photo library (Flickonclick). 4 to 7 days (an Apple Community volunteer) |
| Free battery service | AppleCare replaces the battery below 80% capacity (Apple) |
Apple's hours are best-case figures. Real use is lower.
Find what is draining it
- Open Settings > Battery. The Insight Ongoing iOS Update means the update is still finishing. Apple says battery life returns to normal when it ends.
- Check Daily Usage (iOS 26 or later), then tap View All Battery Usage.
- Read the label under each app. Background Activity means it ran unseen. Notifications means it keeps waking the phone. No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal means the phone is hunting for signal.
Fix the top app first. One app is often most of the problem.
13 fixes, in the order to try them
Apple does not rank these by impact, so this order is our judgment: free and likely first, drastic last.
- Wait 3 to 7 days. Apple says to wait a few days after an update, then check again. Keep it on Wi-Fi and charge it overnight.
- Update your apps. App Store, your profile, Update All. A volunteer in the thread says some apps may not be optimized for iOS 27 yet.
- Deal with the top app. Remove it for a day or use its website. Volunteers named Meta apps as likely culprits.
- Limit Background App Refresh. Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Choose Wi-Fi, then turn it off for apps you do not need.
- Cut "Always" location. Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Change Always to While Using the App.
- Turn off Connectivity Assist. The Apple pages we read do not mention it, but an Apple Community thread and Flickonclick both do. Switch it off at the bottom of Settings > Wi-Fi, then in the (i) menu of your network. Some users missed the second step.
- Force restart. Press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo shows.
- Use Low Power Mode. Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Apple says it limits mail fetch and Background App Refresh, and it turns off above 80%.
- Try Adaptive Power. Apple lists iPhone 17 models as supported in iOS 26 and later.
- Set 5G Auto. Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Apple says it drops to LTE when 5G does not help.
- Dim the screen. Turn on Auto-Brightness and Auto-Lock, as Apple suggests. Flickonclick also suggests turning off Always On Display.
- Quiet noisy notifications. Apple says an app's alerts can keep waking the phone.
- Reset All Settings, last. Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. One user did a factory reset and a Mac restore and still had the drain, so do not start here.
Keep it cool too. Apple says heat can permanently damage capacity, and to take the case off if the phone gets hot while charging.
When it is the battery, not the settings
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says a Service message, or "Your battery's health is significantly degraded", means consider a replacement. It is not a safety issue. Flickonclick also lists a phone hot while idle, or a drop from 40% to 10% in seconds, as hardware signs.
- Under 80%. AppleCare replaces the battery for free below 80%. The warranty covers a defective battery, not normal wear. A launch-day iPhone 17 is past its first year, so check for AppleCare.
- Service. Use a Genius Bar, an Apple Authorized Service Provider or mail-in. Apple inspects the phone before setting a final fee.
- Still bad after a week. Contact Apple Support. Community volunteers cannot escalate to Apple.
The carry-along fix
A power bank does not cure the drain. It gives you hours back while you sort it out. Pick one that lists Qi2, since Apple says the iPhone 17 takes Qi2 at up to 25W. Anker says non-magnetic cases do not work with its magnetic packs, so check your case.
| Anker MagGo 2 Pro | Belkin 10,000mAh Qi2 25W Slim | Anker Prime 25W 3-in-1 | Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Power bank | Power bank | Foldable wall charger | Wall adapter |
| Capacity | 10,000mAh | 10,000mAh | Not a power bank | Not a power bank |
| Wireless | Qi2.2, 25W | Qi2, 25W | Qi2.2, 25W | None |
| Size | 4.14 x 2.79 x 0.7 in, 7.7 oz | Listed as ultra-thin | Folded: 3.74 x 2.38 x 1.22 in, 8.11 oz | 3.2 x 2.6 x 1.3 in, 3.2 oz |
| Fixes | Dead by 6 pm on travel days | A thick pack you never carry | A half-charged phone at 7 am | Slow wired top-ups at a desk |
All figures are maker and Amazon listing claims. Anker says the MagGo 2 Pro takes an iPhone 17 Pro from 0 to 50% in about 25 minutes. Belkin says its pack does it in as little as 39 minutes. Those are different tests, so do not read them as a race.
Which should you buy?
- Buy nothing yet. If the drain fades within a week, you only needed time.
- Winner for most people: Anker MagGo 2 Pro. It has 25W Qi2.2, a USB-C port up to 45W, and Anker's page lists the iPhone 17. Its fan keeps it below 96.8°F (36°C), per Anker. At 0.7 in thick and 7.7 oz it is not the slimmest.
- Want it slimmer: Belkin 10,000mAh Qi2 25W Slim. Its listing names the iPhone 17 Pro and mentions a display, a USB-C cable and two-year coverage.
- Nightstand or hotel: Anker Prime 25W 3-in-1. It also charges an Apple Watch and AirPods. It needs a wall outlet.
- Faster wired top-ups: Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter. Apple says an iPhone 17 reaches about 50% in around 20 minutes with it. The cable is sold separately.

What to skip
- Judging the phone on day one. Apple says wait a few days.
- Slow 7.5W magnetic packs. Anker's page for the 621 MagGo says up to 7.5W, and its Amazon listing names iPhone 16 down to 12, not 17.
- Charging hot in a thick case. Apple says to remove the case first.
