The short answer: heavy games push the Switch 2 toward the bottom of Nintendo's own 2 to 6.5 hour range. Free settings help a little. A power bank is the real fix, but only one that charges over USB-C Power Delivery (PD) with enough watts. A weak bank slows the drain and does not stop it. We did not test any console or bank. The numbers below come from Nintendo and the outlets named.
What is new
The US price of the Switch 2 rose from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1. Nintendo announced the change ahead of time (Tom's Hardware), and Nintendo's US store now lists the system at $499.99. Its US page lists two holiday bundles: Switch Sports Resort at $529.99 and Mario Kart World at $549.99.
The latest Switch 2 system update on Nintendo's list is version 23.0.0, released September 9. Its notes do not mention battery life. Version 22.0.0 on March 16 added Handheld Mode Boost, which matters for battery (see fix 3).
Key facts
| Fact | What Nintendo says |
|---|---|
| Battery life | About 2 to 6.5 hours. Nintendo calls it a rough estimate that depends on the game |
| Battery size | 5,220mAh lithium-ion |
| Full charge | About 3 hours in sleep mode or powered off. Longer while you play |
| USB-C ports | Top and bottom. Use the top port if you stand the console on its kickstand |
| Chargers | The official adapter, the Switch 1 adapter (charging only, not TV mode), or a third-party adapter of 54W or higher. Nintendo has not tested third-party chargers |
| If it is below the range | If a full charge does not last as long as the listed time, Nintendo says the console needs service |
| Switch 2 | Switch OLED | Switch Lite | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery | 5,220mAh | 4,310mAh | 3,570mAh |
| Nintendo's range | 2 to 6.5 hours | 4.5 to 9 hours | 3 to 7 hours |
Nintendo says that, as with most lithium-ion batteries, the battery life gradually decreases over time, and that this is normal.
Try the free fixes first
These are the settings that exist on the Switch 2. Nintendo does not publish how much each one saves, so treat the gains as small.
- Lower the brightness. Hold the HOME button to open Quick Settings, then turn on Auto-Brightness or drag the Screen Brightness slider. TechRadar's test used default brightness.
- Use Airplane Mode for offline games. It is in Quick Settings too. Since update 22.0.0 you can turn Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or NFC back on one by one. BGR says the gain is often only a few minutes in demanding games. It cannot be switched on in TV mode.
- Keep Handheld Mode Boost off away from a plug. Nintendo says it makes compatible Switch software run as if in TV mode, and reports say it only affects original Switch games. One Reddit user reported Doom (2019) lasting 3 hours 43 minutes with Boost on and 5 hours 5 minutes with it off (My Nintendo News, March 19). BGR says the cost can reach about 25%. That is one user's test, not a Nintendo figure.
- Turn off HDR Output and 120Hz Output when you play handheld. The Shortcut and BGR both suggest it. Both toggles are under System Settings > Display. Nintendo gives no battery number for them.
- Shorten Auto-Sleep. It is under System Settings > Sleep Mode.
- Turn on Stop Charging Around 90% for battery health, not play time. Nintendo says it slows battery wear, and that the console may still charge to 100% now and then to calibrate. BGR says it can cost about 10% of charge per session. The path is System Settings > System.
If the meter sits at 1% while you keep playing, that is a display bug, not a bad battery. Nintendo has a separate support page for it.
The rule: USB-C PD, and enough watts
The Switch 2 charges over USB-C. A bank has to deliver PD from a USB-C port. The sources disagree on how many watts that takes:
- Nintendo: third-party adapters of 54W or higher work in every play mode. That is for wall adapters, and Nintendo has not tested them.
- Anker: at least 30W to 45W. It says 45W helps keep the console charged in demanding games, and that lower-watt chargers may only slow the drain.
- SlashGear: at least 30W. It says charging tests show the console usually draws under 25W, even though the official adapter is rated 60W.
Our rule: pick a bank with 45W or more from one USB-C port. Mind capacity too: SlashGear says two full refills need about 17,400mAh, so 10,000mAh is not enough. Anker's guide says that if you use your own cable, it should be a certified 5A USB-C to USB-C cable. All three banks below have a built-in cable.
Where each power bank wins
All three are Anker 20,000mAh banks sold by Anker on Amazon.com when we checked on November 7.
| Anker 20K 87W | Anker 20K 45W | Anker Zolo 20K 30W | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output | 87W total, up to 65W to one device | 45W | 30W |
| Cable | One built-in USB-C | Two built-in USB-C | One built-in USB-C (5.98 in) |
| Weight (listing) | 15.5 oz | 12.85 oz | 12.45 oz |
| Extra play | TechRadar measured about 8 hours 48 minutes on top of about 3 hours (a bank of this size and wattage) | No outlet test found | No outlet test found |
Anker Power Bank 20K 87W with built-in cable. Fixes: dies mid-flight or mid-trip.
- Our pick. In June 2025, TechRadar tested an Anker 20,000mAh 87W bank with Mario Kart World (stationary, default brightness, 50% volume). It got about 3 hours alone and almost 12 hours with the bank, and the console ran without a break while plugged in.
- Do not buy it if weight matters most. It is the heaviest of the three.
Anker Power Bank 20K 45W with dual built-in cables. Fixes: commutes and short trips.
- It meets Anker's 45W line for demanding games and weighs less than the 87W. The listing says it can charge four devices at once.
- Do not buy it if you want a proven number. We found no outlet test of this one.
Anker Zolo Power Bank 20K 30W. Fixes: casual play on a tight budget.
- It meets SlashGear's 30W floor and is the lightest.
- Do not buy it for Mario Kart World-type games. It is below Anker's 45W advice, so it may only slow the drain.
Which should you buy?
- Anker 20K 87W, if you play long or heavy. It is the only one with a published test of its size and wattage, and it clears Nintendo's 54W line for adapters.
- Anker 20K 45W, if you want it lighter. It matches Anker's own advice for demanding games.
- Anker Zolo 30W, if you play lighter games. Expect a slower drain, not a full top-up.
- Buying a Switch 2 as a gift? A bank is a useful add-on to the $499.99 system.
- Skip the bank for now if a light game dies well under 2 hours. Nintendo says that needs service.

What to skip
- Banks that only have USB-A ports. The Switch 2 charges over USB-C.
- 30W banks for heavy games. Anker says they may only slow the drain.
- No-name chargers. Nintendo says it has not checked third-party chargers and cannot promise they run safely.
- A 300W bank just for a Switch. Anker's Prime 26K 300W listing is built for laptops and says it can run two MacBook Pros.
