iPhone Duo Sold Out Until January: Wait or Buy Galaxy Z Fold8?

iPhone Duo Sold Out Until January: Wait or Buy Galaxy Z Fold8?
Key Takeaway

If you are set on iOS, keep your pre-order or place one now. A January date is better than paying a scalper, and walk-in stock on October 23 will be very tight. If you just want a big foldable this year and are open to Android, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is in stock, lighter, and about $300 cheaper at its current Samsung.com sale price. If neither fits, wait for supply to settle in early 2027.

Where to buy

Apple's first foldable is a hit, and that is now a problem for buyers. iPhone Duo pre-orders opened on Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT. Within minutes, shipping estimates moved past the October 23 launch date. MacRumors reported that Apple's US online store soon showed January 25 for all configurations. MacDailyNews saw some orders listed for January 29, 2027.

Apple told CNBC that demand has been "nothing short of extraordinary." It said it is working to get the phone to customers as quickly as possible and will keep taking orders online. Apple did not give a new shipping date or say how many units it has sold.

So if you did not get an early order in, you have three choices: wait for January, try your luck in a store on October 23, or buy a different foldable now. Here is how they compare.

Key dates

Date What happens
Oct 16, 2026 iPhone Duo pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT
Oct 16, 2026 US estimates slip to November, then December, then January

Reports differ on the exact January date. MacRumors saw January 25 for every model. MacDailyNews saw January 29. Engadget said later orders showed January windows, while some earlier buyers got Apple Store pickup on October 23. 9to5Mac said estimates in some countries, including Brazil, have moved into early February. Best Buy showed November shipping for at least one carrier model when Engadget checked on October 17.

Delivery today January 2027 for new US orders Samsung.com shows delivery by Oct 21 (some combos delayed)

Samsung.com listed the unlocked Fold8 at $1,699.99 (256GB), $1,899.99 (512GB) and $2,299.99 (1TB) when we checked on October 18. That is $200 off each list price. In early October the same models were $50 cheaper during Prime Day sales, so the price moves. Samsung's page also warns of "a delay in delivery on popular combinations" due to demand, so check the exact color and storage you want.

What the delay means for you

Walk-in stock will be thin. MacRumors says some Apple Stores may have the iPhone Duo on October 23, but inventory will likely be "very tight." A separate MacRumors report says retail staff were told to warn customers against counting on walk-in purchases. Apple has not said whether stores or carriers will get launch stock.

Scalpers are already busy. 9to5Mac reports resale listings on eBay and X with asking prices as high as $10,000. MacRumors reported one unit resold for $5,000. Paying that is never a good deal for a phone you can order at $1,999.

Apple did try to add supply. Before launch, 9to5Mac reported that Apple raised its iPhone Duo supply-chain orders by about 30%, citing China's Securities Times. It was not enough to meet day-one demand.

Ordering now holds your place. Apple says it will keep taking orders online, and each new order joins the back of the line. If you are sure you want one, an order today beats an order next week.

Where each phone wins

iPhone Duo wins on:

  • iOS and the Apple ecosystem. If you use a Mac, Apple Watch or iMessage every day, this is the only foldable that fits.
  • Durability rating. IP68 means real dust protection. The Fold8's IP48 rating only covers small particles.
  • Storage. A 2TB option is available. The Fold8 tops out at 1TB.
  • Battery claims. Apple promises up to 24 hours with both screens used equally.

Galaxy Z Fold8 wins on:

  • Availability. You can have one this week instead of in late January.
  • Price. At today's sale price, it is about $300 less than the iPhone Duo at 256GB.
  • Weight and size. It is 53g lighter and thinner both open and closed.
  • Physical SIM. Handy if you travel and buy local SIM cards.

Which should you buy?

  • Keep or place an iPhone Duo pre-order if you are firmly in the Apple world. January is a long wait, but it is better than paying a scalper or settling for a phone you do not want.
  • Try a store on October 23 if you live near a big Apple Store and can go early. Go in expecting to leave empty-handed, and check Apple's site for pickup slots from October 24.
  • Buy the Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want a large foldable before the holidays and you are happy on Android. It is in stock, lighter, and cheaper right now.
  • Wait if you are not in a hurry at all. Shipping times usually shrink a few months after launch, and early reviews and repair costs will be clearer by then. Your current phone will not mind.
