Two wide foldables, one awkward week. Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days run October 6 and 7, and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 is already discounted. Apple's iPhone Duo opens for pre-order on October 16 and arrives October 23, at full price, with reports of limited supply.
Both phones have a 7.6-inch inner screen and a passport-style shape. So the real question is not which phone is better on paper. It is whether the Fold8 discount is big enough to beat waiting for Apple. Here is the math.
The prices right now
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | iPhone Duo | |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,899.99 list / $1,649.99 on sale | $1,999 |
| 512GB | $2,099.99 list / $1,849.99 on sale | $2,199 |
| 1TB | $2,499.99 list / $2,249.99 on Samsung.com | $2,599 |
| 2TB | Not offered | $3,199 |
| Available | Now | Pre-order Oct 16, ships Oct 23 |
What we verified: Samsung.com listed the unlocked Fold8 at $1,649.99 (256GB), $1,849.99 (512GB) and $2,249.99 (1TB) on October 5, $250 off each tier. 9to5Google reported on October 1 that Amazon had the same $1,649.99 and $1,849.99 prices in its early Prime deals, and Gizmodo reported the Amazon deal on September 24. Apple's prices come from its U.S. online store, and Apple does not discount new iPhones.
What to watch for on October 6–7: Amazon has not announced a separate Prime Day price for the Fold8. If it drops below $1,649.99, that is a new low. If it stays at $1,649.99, it matches Samsung.com, and buying from Samsung lets you add trade-in credit. Amazon Germany has the Fold8 about 30% off, according to GSMArena, but European prices do not carry over to the U.S.
The gap: at today's sale prices, the Fold8 is $349 cheaper at every storage tier it offers (256GB, 512GB and 1TB).
Two-year cost of ownership
Foldables break more often and cost more to fix than normal phones, so we priced in each brand's theft-and-loss protection plan for two years. Taxes and trade-ins are not included.
| Two years, 256GB | Galaxy Z Fold8 | iPhone Duo |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | $1,649.99 (sale) | $1,999 |
| Protection plan | Samsung Care+ with Theft and Loss, 2 years: $349 | AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, 2 x $199.99 a year: $399.98 |
| Total | $1,998.99 | $2,398.98 |
| Inner screen repair with plan | $29 | $99 |
| Outer screen repair with plan | $29 | $29 |
That is a $400 difference over two years, before you count any trade-in. Samsung's plan price comes from SamMobile's report on Samsung Care+ ($269 standard, $349 with theft and loss for two years; Samsung ran a $200-off promo on these plans through September 7). Apple's comes from The Mac Observer's report on Apple's store listing.
The inner-screen fee matters most. A cracked folding screen costs $29 to fix under Samsung Care+, compared with $99 under AppleCare+. Apple had not published out-of-warranty repair prices for the Duo at the time of The Mac Observer's report.
Trade-in changes the picture. Samsung advertised up to $1,200 off with an eligible trade-in at launch. Apple pays up to $885 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max, while AT&T and T-Mobile offer up to $1,200 and $1,000 off the Duo on 36-month plans. If you have a recent flagship to trade, check both companies' quotes. The gap may shrink or flip.

Where the Galaxy Z Fold8 wins
- Price, today. $1,649.99 for 256GB is $349 under the Duo, and you can have it this week instead of hoping for an October 23 delivery.
- Weight and thickness. At 201g, Samsung calls it its lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. The Duo weighs 254g. That is about the difference between a big phone and a small tablet in your hand.
- Cheaper screen repairs. $29 for any cracked screen under Samsung Care+.
- Updates. Samsung's flagship policy covers seven years of Android OS and security updates, a long commitment in writing.
- No eSIM requirement. Handy if your carrier or travel SIM still uses a physical card.
The catch: IP48 means limited protection against dust. The "4" covers solid objects larger than 1mm, not fine sand or pocket lint, which are what usually damage hinges. Samsung.com also warned on October 5 of delivery delays on popular color and storage combinations.
Where the iPhone Duo wins
- IP68 dust and water protection. This is the biggest hardware difference. The Duo is rated against dust, the Fold8 is not.
- iOS and the Apple ecosystem. iMessage, FaceTime, AirDrop, Apple Watch, Mac continuity, and iOS 27.1 with Split View multitasking on the inner screen. If your family and your work run on Apple, that does not show up in a spec table, but it is the reason most people buy an iPhone.
- 2TB storage option. Samsung tops out at 1TB.
- Faster wired top-ups. 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60W adapter, according to Apple.
- Touch ID works open or closed, and it pairs with Apple Watch unlock.
The catch: you pay $349 more up front and about $400 more over two years, the phone is 53g heavier, and you cannot get one until at least October 23. Reports cited by MacRumors put final assembly yields just above 60% in mid-September, with a 2026 target of only 6 million to 8 million units, so many buyers will wait longer.

Switching costs: the part the price tag hides
Moving from iPhone to Galaxy is easier than it used to be. Samsung says the updated Smart Switch lets iPhone users scan a QR code and move data wirelessly, including passwords, passkeys, call history and eSIM data, and that Quick Share now works with AirDrop. But you will still lose iMessage group chats as blue bubbles, FaceTime on your Mac, Apple Watch support, and any apps you have bought for iOS.
Going the other way is just as real. An Android user moving to the Duo gives up Google's Android ecosystem tools, Galaxy Watch support, and any Android app purchases.
Rule of thumb: if you own an Apple Watch or use a Mac daily, the $349 you save on the Fold8 will not cover what you lose. If you own neither, the Fold8 deal is hard to argue with.

What about the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra?
If you want more phone than the Duo rather than a cheaper one, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra starts at $2,099.99. You get an 8-inch inner screen, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a 200MP main camera, a 5,000mAh battery and 45W charging, in a 4.1mm-thin, 215g body, according to Samsung. It is also IP48. We have not seen a verified U.S. Amazon deal on the Ultra this week, so compare prices on our Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra page before Prime Day ends.
Verdict by buyer type

|---|---|---|
| An Android user who wants a big foldable now | Galaxy Z Fold8 on sale | $1,649.99, in stock, lighter, cheaper repairs |
| An iPhone user with an Apple Watch or Mac | Wait for the iPhone Duo | iOS, IP68, Touch ID; the ecosystem is worth more than $349 |

| Someone who needs 2TB of storage | iPhone Duo | Samsung stops at 1TB |
| A beach, gym or job-site user | iPhone Duo | IP68 dust protection versus IP48 |
| A budget-first buyer | Neither, yet | Wait for first reviews and holiday pricing; both phones are first-year designs |
FAQ
Is the Galaxy Z Fold8 on sale for Prime Day?
As of October 5, Samsung.com lists it at $250 off: $1,649.99 for 256GB and $1,849.99 for 512GB. 9to5Google reported Amazon matching those prices in its early Prime deals. Watch Amazon on October 6–7 for any further cut.
Is the iPhone Duo cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold8?
No. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. The Fold8 lists at $1,899.99 and is currently $1,649.99.
Which is more durable?
On paper, the iPhone Duo. It is rated IP68 for dust and water. The Fold8 is IP48, which offers only limited dust protection. Long-term hinge durability for both is unknown until independent testing comes in.
Which has the better camera?
Both have two high-resolution rear cameras with 2x optical-quality zoom from the main sensor and no dedicated telephoto. Wait for side-by-side reviews after October 23 before deciding on camera alone.
Will the iPhone Duo be discounted soon?
Unlikely at Apple. Carrier trade-in offers from AT&T and T-Mobile are the realistic way to lower the price.
Bottom line
At $1,649.99, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is the better deal this week. It costs about $400 less to own over two years, it is lighter, and it is in stock. The iPhone Duo is the better phone for people who already live on Apple devices, and its IP68 rating is a real advantage on a folding phone. If you are in that group, skip the Prime Day deal, finish Apple's Get Ready step on October 12, and read our iPhone Duo pre-order guide.
