MacBook Pro M6 vs M5: Is the Discounted M5 the Smarter Buy?
Key Takeaway

If the M5 14-inch is clearly cheaper than $1,999 where you shop, it is the smarter buy for most people: the M6 keeps the same screen, ports, battery claim, memory and storage options. Pay the M6 price only if you run local AI models, compile code, render 3D or need Wi-Fi 7. If you want a touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro, that is only a report so far, so wait for it.

Where to buy

The short answer: the discounted M5 is the smarter buy for most people, and the M6 is worth it only for heavy AI, code and 3D work.

Apple announced the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on October 27, 2026. It costs $1,999, opens for pre-order on October 28, and ships on November 6. The M5 version launched at $1,599 a year ago with 512GB; the 16GB/1TB M5 that matches the new base model listed at $1,699 this year, and Amazon has sold it for $1,499. Most other write-ups stop at a spec list. Below you get a buy-or-skip answer for each type of buyer, plus the cheaper M5 options on Amazon.

About the price. Sources do not fully agree. iDownloadBlog counts a $400 jump from the M5's $1,599 launch price. VideoCardz and Digital Trends say the M5 first rose to $1,699 and later to $1,999. The fair match is the 16GB/1TB M5 at $1,699 list, a $300 gap. Amazon has cut that model further: Mac Prices reported it at $1,499 in June 2026. Amazon prices move daily, so check the live M5 price before you compare.

What is new, and where each one wins

M6 wins on speed. Apple says the M6 GPU is up to 30 percent faster than M5 and on-device AI work is up to 25 percent faster. Apple also says the Neural Engine is up to 1.9x faster. In its own charts, Apple lists Xcode builds and Blender ray tracing at about 1.3x the M5. If you do that work every day, that adds up.

M5 wins on price. Everything you see and touch is the same: the display, the six speakers, the 12MP camera, the three Thunderbolt 4 ports, the battery claim and the memory and storage choices. For email, school, spreadsheets, photo editing and normal video work, the M5 is already fast.

One catch on memory. Apple lists the base M6 at 16GB with 153GB/s of bandwidth. The 170GB/s figure applies to the 24GB and 32GB options.

Apple's own lineup has moved on. Apple's MacBook Pro page now lists the 14-inch with M6, M5 Pro or M5 Max. The plain M5 is no longer the headline model, so remaining M5 stock sits with resellers such as Amazon. That is where discounts show up.

Which should you buy?

  • Student or office worker on a budget: buy the M5. It does everything you need, and the saving is real if it is under $1,999. Do not buy the M6 here unless you want Wi-Fi 7 for the next five years.
  • Developer, 3D artist or someone running local AI models: buy the M6. The extra cores and the new Neural Engine are aimed at you. Do not buy the M5 if builds, renders or local models are your daily bottleneck. If you need more power than M6, look at the M5 Pro instead.
  • Already own an M5 MacBook Pro: skip the M6. The screen, ports and battery claim are the same, so you would pay a lot for a small step. Do not upgrade unless your work hits the M5's limits every day.
  • Coming from an Intel Mac or an M1: either one is a big jump. Pick by price. Apple says up to 11x faster graphics than M1, but you would see a large gain from the M5 too. Do not overpay for the M6 just because it is new.
  • On a tighter budget than any MacBook Pro: look at the MacBook Air M5. Lighter and cheaper, with less sustained power. Do not buy it if you edit video or render for hours.
  • Wait: want a touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro. Bloomberg has reported one is coming, and Apple holds another event today (October 28). It is not announced as we write this, so treat it as a rumor. See our event preview. Do not wait if you need a laptop this month, since a new design could cost more.

FAQ

Is the MacBook Pro M6 better than the M5?
Yes, on speed. It has two extra CPU cores, two extra GPU cores, a faster Neural Engine and Wi-Fi 7. Apple claims up to 30 percent faster graphics. But the design, screen, ports, memory and storage choices stay the same.

MacBook Pro M5 or M6: which should I get?
If the M5 costs clearly less than $1,999, get the M5. If the prices are close, get the M6. Pick the M6 for heavy AI, code or 3D work.

What is the MacBook Pro M6 price and release date?
It starts at $1,999 in the US. Pre-orders open on October 28, and it is available on November 6.

Should I wait for the M6 or buy the M5 now?
Do not wait for the M6, since it is already announced. Wait only if you want the rumored touchscreen OLED model. Otherwise buy whichever is cheaper today.
