TV mount height calculator: how high to hang your TV, shown in 3D

Pick your TV size and where you sit. It works out how high to mount the TV with the centre at eye level, the bottom and top edges, how far you look up, and whether it fits above a fireplace. You see it in 3D, with the bracket height and the wall mounts that take your size.

65-inch TV · sofa · eyes 42 in up · 9 ft from the screen

Mount a 65-inch TV with its centre 42 in off the floor

The bottom edge sits 26 in up and the top edge 58 in, 38 in under your 8 ft ceiling. That puts the middle of the screen level with your eyes, so you look straight ahead.

A fixed mount is the slimmest and cheapest, and with the screen at eye level it needs no tilt. Sit off to one side, or hang it in a corner? Choose a full-motion mount, which swings out and turns toward you.

Where do I drill? The VESA offset, explained

A mount’s brackets screw into four holes on the back of your TV (the VESA pattern). Those holes are not always in the middle of the screen. The VESA offset is how far the centre of the four holes sits from the middle of the screen: look in the manual or spec sheet, or measure it. Then set the wall plate’s centre at the screen’s centre minus that offset.

For example, if the holes are 3 in below the middle of the screen, the plate’s centre goes 3 in lower than the screen’s centre: 39 in for this TV. If they are above the middle, it goes higher. Your mount’s instructions show where its plate sits against the TV, so check them before you drill, and find a stud first.

TV mount height chart by TV size

The centre of the screen goes at eye level: 42 in (107 cm) on a sofa, 50 in (127 cm) sitting up in bed. Heights are from the floor to the TV’s frame, which adds about 1 in to the screen. Above a 54 in mantel the bottom edge stays 6 in clear of it, and the top edge needs at least 2 in under the ceiling. Your seat and room may differ: use the calculator above.

How the calculator works

Centre at your eyes. The usual rule is to hang the TV so the middle of the screen is level with your eyes when you sit, so you look straight ahead. The calculator starts from the seat you pick: a sofa about 42 in off the floor, a recliner 38 in, sitting up in bed 50 in, a desk or gaming chair 46 in, standing 62 in. Those are our typical figures, not measurements of you, so adjust the eye height: sit the way you watch and measure from the floor to your eyes.

Three limits. The TV is a 16:9 screen with a frame that adds about 1 in, the same as our TV size calculator. Its bottom edge never goes lower than 6 in off the floor, and its top edge stays at least 2 in under the ceiling. Above a fireplace, console or dresser the bottom edge stays at least 6 in above the mantel (our choice, so things standing on the shelf don’t touch the screen). When a limit and your eye height disagree, the limit wins. If the floor or mantel limit and the ceiling limit can’t both be met, the TV won’t fit, and the calculator tells you the ceiling height it needs.

How far you look up. The angle is the rise from your eyes to the middle of the screen, over how far you sit from it, turned into degrees. Keeping it within 15° is a common rule of thumb for comfortable viewing. We call 15° to 30° “a bit high” and anything steeper too high for a long film. These are rules of thumb, not a standard. Sitting further back, or hanging the TV lower, shrinks the angle.

Which mount. With the screen at eye level (up to 5° of tilt) a fixed mount does the job. From 5° up, or anywhere above a fireplace, a tilting mount angles the screen down toward you. Past 30° above a fireplace, a pull-down mount that brings the TV to eye level is the fix. If you sit off to one side or hang the TV in a corner, a full-motion mount swings it round; the numbers can’t tell, so that is your call. The picks show mounts that take your TV size, the kind you need first.

Bracket height, and what it can’t know. The wall plate sits at about the centre of the screen, moved by your TV’s VESA offset: how far the centre of its four mounting holes sits from the middle of the screen. It can’t know where your studs are, your TV’s exact frame, or how you slouch, so measure twice and follow your mount’s instructions. Above a working fireplace, check your TV’s manual for the heat it can take.

Questions people ask

How high should a TV be mounted on the wall?

Put the centre of the screen at your eye height when seated: about 42 in (107 cm) off the floor on a sofa. For a 65-inch TV that puts the bottom edge about 26 in up and the top edge at about 58 in. A TV hung higher than that makes you tilt your head back.

How high to mount a TV in a bedroom?

Sitting up in bed your eyes are about 50 in (127 cm) off the floor, so put the centre of the screen there. A 55-inch TV then has its bottom edge about 36 in up and its top edge at 64 in; a 43-inch has its bottom edge about 39 in up. If you mostly watch lying down, enter a lower eye height and the TV comes down with it.

How high to mount a TV above a fireplace?

Keep the bottom edge at least 6 in above the mantel. With a 54 in mantel that is 60 in, so a 55-inch TV has its centre at about 74 in and you look up about 16° from a sofa 9 ft away. That is a bit high: use a tilting mount, or sit about 10 ft from the screen to bring it back under 15°. A 65-inch fits under an 8 ft ceiling there with about 3 in to spare; a 75-inch needs a ceiling of about 8 ft 4 in (100 in). No mantel, as with an electric fireplace? Measure from the top of the unit.

How high to mount a 65 inch TV?

On a sofa, put the centre of a 65-inch TV at 42 in off the floor. The screen is about 33 in tall with its frame, so the bottom edge sits about 26 in up and the top edge about 58 in, which leaves 38 in under an 8 ft ceiling. Sitting up in bed the centre goes at 50 in. Above a 54 in mantel the centre goes at 76 in and the top edge reaches 93 in, about 3 in under an 8 ft ceiling.

How high to mount a 55 inch TV?

On a sofa, put the centre of a 55-inch TV at 42 in: the bottom edge is 28 in up and the top edge 56 in. Sitting up in bed the centre goes at 50 in, with the bottom edge 36 in up. Above a 54 in mantel the centre goes at 74 in and the bottom edge at 60 in.

How high to mount a TV above a console or dresser?

Treat the furniture like a mantel: leave at least 6 in between its top and the bottom of the TV. Over a 30 in console a 55-inch TV has its centre at 50 in (bottom edge 36 in), about 4° above eye level from 9 ft away, which is fine. Over a 36 in dresser the centre goes at 56 in (bottom edge 42 in) and you look up about 7°, so a tilting mount helps. In the calculator, switch on “Above a fireplace” and enter the furniture’s height as the mantel.

How high should a TV be mounted from the floor?

Measure to the centre of the screen, not the bottom edge: 42 in on a sofa. The bottom edge then depends on the size: 31 in for a 43-inch, 28 in for a 55-inch, 26 in for a 65-inch, 23 in for a 75-inch and 21 in for an 85-inch. Bigger TVs reach lower, but no TV should go closer than 6 in to the floor.

Is it bad to mount a TV too high?

A little high is fine; far too high strains your neck. A common rule of thumb is to keep the middle of the screen within 15° of eye level, and past 30° is clearly too high. From 9 ft away, 15° means the centre can sit at most about 71 in off the floor (29 in above your eyes on a sofa). From 6 ft it drops to about 61 in: the closer you sit, the lower the TV has to go.

Where do I drill for a TV mount?

The wall plate sits at about the centre of the screen, then you adjust for your TV’s VESA offset: how far the centre of the four mounting holes on the back sits from the middle of the screen (the manual lists it, or measure it). If the holes are 3 in below the middle and you want the centre at 42 in, the plate’s centre goes at 39 in. Find a stud first and follow your mount’s instructions.
