Echo Dot vs Echo Dot Max (2026): Is the Bass Worth $20 More?

Amazon launched a new Echo Dot on October 28 at $99.99. The Echo Dot Max now lists at $119.99, so the gap is $20 (it is $40 against the old 5th-gen Dot). We lined up the real differences and the sale history so you know which one to buy before Black Friday.

Echo Dot vs Echo Dot Max (2026): Is the Bass Worth $20 More?
Key Takeaway

Buy the Echo Dot Max if you play music. It has a woofer and a tweeter, and Amazon says it has nearly 2x the bass of the new Dot. Buy the new Echo Dot ($99.99) for a bedroom or office where voice and smart home control matter more than sound. Both have the same Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub. If the Max is at or below the Dot price, take the Max. Skip the 5th-gen Dot unless it is near its old $50 price.

Where to buy

The short answer: the Echo Dot Max is the better buy if you play music, and the new Echo Dot is the better buy if you want a cheaper, compact speaker with a smart home hub. Amazon launched a new Echo Dot on October 28, 2026 at $99.99. The Max now lists at $119.99, so the gap is $20. For that $20 you get a woofer and tweeter and, by Amazon's own claim, nearly 2x the bass. The Max also goes on sale often. If it is at or below the Dot's price, buy the Max.

We did not test either speaker. The facts come from Amazon and the sources at the end.

What changed this season

  • Late August: Amazon raised Echo prices. Shopifreaks (Sep 5) put the Echo Dot at $80 list, up from $50, and the Max at $120, up from $100.
  • October 28: Amazon launched the new Echo Dot at $99.99. It is the first Dot with a built-in smart home hub, and Amazon claims 50% more bass than the last Dot. Kids versions start at $109.99.
  • Still on sale: Matterhome says the previous Dot is still sold for about $80 in the US.
  • Black Friday: it is November 27. We found no Amazon announcement of 2026 Echo prices yet. Sale prices move daily, so check the live Amazon page.

Specs side by side

Only the real differences are below. The 2022 Dot gets a column because Amazon still sells it.

Echo Dot Max Echo Dot (2026) Echo Dot (5th gen)
US list price $119.99 (was $99.99) $99.99 About $80 (was $49.99)
Speaker Two-way: woofer and tweeter One full-range driver One front-firing driver
Bass (Amazon's claims) Nearly 3x the 5th gen, nearly 2x the 2026 Dot 50% more than the 5th gen Baseline
Smart home hub (Zigbee, Thread, Matter) Yes Yes, a first for the Dot No Zigbee hub
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 Not stated in what we found Dual-band Wi-Fi
Weight 17.8 oz (505 g) Not published in what we found 10.7 oz (304 g)

Same on all three, per Amazon's pages: an eero Wi-Fi extender is built in, and routines can use temperature and motion or presence sensing. Reviews list the Max's sensors differently, so do not choose on sensors. Amazon says Alexa+ is free with Prime.

Size: sources disagree on the Max. Engadget lists 3.9 x 4.4 x 4.9 inches, while SoundGuys lists 108 x 108 x 99 mm. They agree it is bigger and much heavier than the 5th-gen Dot. Amazon calls the new Dot compact but does not publish its size in what we read.

How the sound compares

The Max has the better hardware for music on paper, but reviewers are not wild about it.

  • Engadget (Nov 2025, 79/100): better than the standard Dot and in line with other $100 speakers. It has one tweeter and a 2.5-inch woofer. The reviewer found the bass lacked a clear thump and some sounds blurred together.
  • SoundGuys (Feb 2026, 7.6/10): noticeably louder and fuller than the 5th-gen Dot. It is mono. Sound is clean to about 70% volume, then the processing cuts bass.
  • PCMag (via Lifehacker, Feb 2026): an Editors' Choice, with fairly strong low end for its size.
  • TechRadar: its headline calls the Max Amazon's best mid-range speaker, "but not by much".

What we could not find: a listening test of the 2026 Dot. Amazon's own listing says the Max has nearly 2x the bass of that Dot. That is Amazon's claim, not a measurement.

Where each one wins

Echo Dot Max. Best for: music in a medium room.

  • Reviews say it sounds better than the 5th-gen Dot, and Amazon claims nearly 2x the bass of the 2026 Dot. It also has Wi-Fi 6E and a one-year warranty (SmartHomeCompared lists 90 days for the 5th gen).
  • Downsides: it is mono, has no battery and no wired input, and the front buttons can be fiddly (SoundGuys, Engadget).

Echo Dot (2026). Best for: a bedroom, desk or first hub.

  • $20 cheaper at list, with the same AZ3 chip and the same hub as the Max (Matterhome). Amazon calls it compact.
  • Downsides: one driver, and no sound reviews yet.

Smart home hub: a tie. If you already own a hub-equipped Echo or an eero router, a new Dot adds another speaker, not a new skill (Matterhome).

Stereo pairs: Amazon's listings say you can pair two Dots or two Maxes. Amazon sells the Max as a two-pack, and Engadget did not test pairing.

Which should you buy?

  • You play music and the room is medium-sized: Echo Dot Max. Our rule of thumb is to buy it at about $100 or less. It has been under that more than once.
  • Bedroom, office or first smart home hub: Echo Dot (2026) at $99.99. You get the same hub for $20 less at list.
  • The Max is on sale at or below the Dot's price: Max. No reason to pick the weaker speaker for the same money.
  • Wait: Black Friday is November 27. Last year the Max's first Black Friday discount was only about 10%, and the $79.99 low came in December. Amazon has not announced 2026 Echo prices. The new Dot has no sale history yet.
  • Skip the 5th-gen Dot at about $80. It costs $20 less than the new Dot but has no Zigbee hub and less bass. Our rule of thumb: only buy it near its old $50 price.
  • Skip both: if you want big sound, look at Echo Studio ($219.99). If you want a screen, look at an Echo Show.
  • Own a 5th-gen Dot? Keep it unless you need the hub.
